Favorite/best cameos?

Postby BobbyB » Sun Jan 07, 2018 9:46 pm

The other night I couldn't sleep, so I went through my usual routine of scanning for a movie to put on. I happened upon the love-it-or-hate-it classic, Cabin Boy. Those of you who have seen it know that David Letterman has a short scene in it in which he is perfectly cast: clearly loving every second of being the biggest jackass possible in the course of taking the piss out of the main character. It got me to thinking: what other cameos have been right on the nose? The two which immediately popped to my mind: Bruce Campbell in the Sam Raimi Spiderman movie (asshole usher at the play), and Tom Waits in Mystery Men (nonlethal weapons dealer who hangs out at old folks' homes "for the ladies").

What say you? List off your best/worst/favorite cameos!

That's Spider-Man 2. In Spider-Man, Campbell plays the announcer at the wrestling match. In the third one, he's the maitre d'. Lucy Lawless' cameo in the first Spidey flick is also pretty fun, if much shorter.

A few picks which immediately come to my mind:

Woody Strode and Jack Elam in Once Upon A Time In The West (I can never remember the third guy's name but he's a Leone regular)
John Cleese in Silverado
I could rattle off several great ones from The Muppet Movie but Steve Martin is the clear standout. One of my absolute favorite performances by him, in fact.
Likewise, The Player is packed with great cameos, but I'm not sure anyone does any better than Buck Henry's pitch for The Graduate 2 in the opening scene.
Gene Hackman gets a whole scene in Young Frankenstein but perhaps the best Mel Brooks movie cameo is Marcel Marceau's brief appearance as the only person to speak in Silent Movie.
There's nothing particularly special about Cate Blanchett's short scene performance in Hot Fuzz but it's pretty amusing to completely obscure her inside a contamination suit with a surgical mask.
Marshall McLuhan in Annie Hall, natch.
Stan Lee in pretty much everything. (What can I say? I've been a member of the Merry Marvel Marching Society since I was a wee lad. I'm a sucker for Stan.)

Oh, and Alfred Hitchcock in Lifeboat.

!!!! Yes!!!! Aside from being underappreciated classic Hitchcock, it's a great, clever (and easy-to-miss, I know I did on my first viewing) way to insert himself.

How about Lemmy narrating Tromeo & Juliet?

Jackie Chan in Tom-Yum-Goong. A cameo of one of his stunt doubles pretending to be a cameo of Chan. Perfect fit.

Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back: Morris Day and the Time!
Actually Mark Hamill has a pretty good one in that movie too, come to think of it.

Jaws: Peter Benchley

Two Bill Murrays: Zombieland and Parks & Rec.

Much of the beginning of This is the End, plus Channing Tatum near the end of the End.

Can't believe nobody's mentioned Alec Baldwin in Glengarry Glen Ross.

His scene is like ten minutes long, I'm not sure that qualifies as a "cameo."

That would disqualify a lot of the other already mentioned folks.
I don't think the length necessarily matters but I will concede perhaps Baldwin doesn't qualify as he gets very high billing, and billing (or rather lack thereof) is a better indication of cameoness I think.

I think 'cameosity' works better.
