Yellow Rose Gallery closing

Postby Shorty » Mon Nov 13, 2017 7:56 pm

What new bldng is going there?

"After three and a half years of growing into Madison's largest and most inclusive local art gallery, the building is coming down and the Yellow Rose Gallery will have to vacate its State Street location. Join us for our final Gallery Night at 122 State Street."

They're putting in a 10-story Walmart with a bar on the ground floor called Sam's Klub.

It's a pet project of Soglin's.

I had 20 free seconds, Shorty, so I dug up the proposal. And here's a planning doc/sales pitch.

Project Description: Demolish six-story commercial building to construct nine-story, 120-room hotel with first floor restaurant-tavern and rooftop lounge.

It includes demolishing that godawful skywalk across Dayton.

Ducatista, thanks for the good research. Sounds like a bad idea. They already built the new Marriott hotel near the square. And isn't a new hotel the plan for the MATC downtown bldng? Plus there are two other hotels on the square (Concourse, Inn on the park), with three more a few blocks from the square: Hilton, Hyatt, and Edgewater. Are these hotels routinely filled? How many hotels are needed downtown? How about some affordable housing (condo's, not more luxury apts) or homeless housing instead?

Back in the '60's that building was the YWCA until they acquired the old Belmont Hotel on the Square.

They really can't leave well enough alone when it comes to that part of the city, can they?
