Did you go to Dave Chappelle?

Postby john_titor » Thu Nov 13, 2014 6:53 pm

I contemplated, but the only show left was the last on Sunday. How was it?

For how long did he perform? Did he say why he was touring? My first thought was money, but I thought he had a ton when he quit the show. Also, why so many shows? I would think a hyped comeback special would fill arenas across the country. 26 shows total versus, what, five shows in Madison alone? Glad to hear it was a good time.

:D

Took the family, we are all big Chappelle fans. We were told upon entering that any heckling would get you ejected. They were also circulating amongst the audience inside warning about heckling. Saw a lot of realllly drunk people in the audience. Then again it was Friday night.

He was onstage for about an hour. It was hard to hear a lot of what he said. The mic seemed over-modulated and the PA sound sucked. He did have some funny bits about taking in a rescue dog, being blackmailed with a sex tape, and how he jerks off when his wife leaves the house.

Overall we had a good time.

I could hear fine, but then again we were in the fourth row :D

They were REALLY serious about no crowd shenanigans. You weren't even allowed to have a phone visible, let alone text or record (the obvious no-no). Unfortunately, the no heckling rule didn't seem to apply to other call-outs. There was a girl two rows behind us -- again, very close to the stage -- who kept going, "WOOOO!" and responding loudly to absolutely everything, so it cut through the general laughter and broke up the mood. Like Chappelle would say, "So I got kids..." and she would yell, "WHAT ARE THEIR NAAAAMES???" Nobody gives a shit, honey. The woman behind me wanted to kill her.

About 2/3 of the way through the Friday 7:30 show (the one we attended), Chappelle was trying to light a cigarette and a guy in the front row, just a few feet from the stage, stood up to offer him a light. He seemed fine with it and thanked the guy, but then cracked a joke about the security. "Nice job, guys. I could have been stabbed." So several minutes later, the security guys finally made up their mind to escort the guy out. Chappelle said, "Aw, no, don't do that. It's cool," but the security guys did anyway. He finished the show and it was still great, but my husband remarked that it had definitely broken his concentration and gotten him off his rhythm.

The opener (can't remember who it was, but he wasn't local and it wasn't the same guy they had in Milwaukee) was really hacky and predictable. I was surprised by the fact that he was opening for such a big act, especially when he was the only one. I was expecting at least two. The aforementioned call-out girl behind us was super noticeable during his set, mostly because he didn't get much noise. During Chappelle's set, the noise/laughter level was a pretty constant high.

Chappelle had his own dj to hype the crowd up, which was fine, but he spent a while playing kind of bland mainstream stuff and I thought, "You need a special guy to play stuff like Flo Rida?"

Despite all that, we had a great, great time. We were HOWLING through the whole set. His timing was super tight, and I can't think of anything that didn't hit. The mix of stories about his family and the creative profanity he used to relate them was spot on.

The Orpheum looked really good. I will say that I wish they had at least some sort of munchies, even just prepackaged chips or cookies or something, because we didn't have a chance to eat before the show and I would have liked something to balance out my rather strong drink.

There. Detailed enough for ya?

Awesome. I very much appreciated the detail. Thank you both for taking the time to reply. I truly was interested in the show and I feel like now I know.

Some of my other questions kind of answered here:

Dave Chappelle Is Back (This Time We're 100% Sure It's Maybe Totally for Real)
We've heard the rumors almost since the moment he walked off the set of his legendary Comedy Central show in 2005 at the height of its popularity and disappeared: Dave Chappelle was re-emerging. Going on tour. Getting a new TV show. But this summer, something happened. Ten shows at Radio City, all sold out in hours, all brilliant. Mark Anthony Green sits down with our favorite comic genius for his first in-depth interview in nearly a decade to discuss what took him so long, Donald Sterling's rights, D'Angelo's answering machine, and his real comeback plan
