Trite, overused phrases that need to be banned in 2019

Postby Henry Vilas » Tue Jan 08, 2019 10:50 am

The one I hear often on news shows and is starting to grate on me is: "by the end of the day."

D'you mean "at the end of the day," used to mean something like "when you get right down to it"?

When I hear "by the end of the day" it's usually literal, if a little vague. End of the business day? End of the calendar day? EOB and EOD are two very different things in my world.

You're right. "At" not "by."

I wholeheartedly agree. It's kind of a stupid thing to say to begin with. What else would "it" be?

A few years ago a friend of mine started using that, and it quickly spread to my own vocab. I don't even like it -- think it's meaningless drivel -- and yet I catch myself saying it a couple of times per month. Can't stop myself, it's automatic.

Oh well, it is what it is.

DAMMIT!

I suppose this doesn't jibe exactly with the thread title but ...

"Reference," when used to mean "refer to," drives me crazy. It sounds like something a clueless spokesclone would say when trying to maintain a bureaucratic demeanor. It seems stiff-shouldered and ugly.

This, however, I could listen to over and over.

Robert Fripp - I May Not Have Had Enough Of Me But I've Had Enough Of You

That is the way it is because it is that way
It is that way in that it is the way it is
In the way that it is that way that is the way it is
In the way that that is the way that is the way it is that isit is the way
Or, that it is that way is the way it is
The way it is that is the way it is
In that it is the way it is is because it is that way
Or that it is the way that it is is the way that it is that
That is the way that it is the way that it is is the way thatit is that way

I may not have enough of me but I've had enough of you

"opens up about"
"speaks out about"
And not just the terminology; what's being said!

Transgender.

You're not a man who was born with the wrong plumbing, you're a man who WISHES he had other plumbing. And the same goes for women. Men and women have been gay and/or uncomfortable with their gender for literally millenia. Society doesn't need to stop what it's doing to make sure you're comfortable in your chosen bathroom.

Learn how to deal with your shit just like everyone else learns to deal with their shit. And Democrats need to quit tossing votes to Republicans by acting like being gay is some sort of new phenomenon that needs to be handled with kid gloves. Man the fuck up. People are born with autism, down's syndrome, cancer, heart defects, diabetes and a host of other serious ailments. But we all need to stop what we're doing to make sure a woman feels comfortable pissing in a urinal?

Y'all have a different definition of "liberal" than I do, that's for sure. I want to see poor people with health insurance, employees with decent working conditions and a government that doesn't bomb the shit out of Arabs because the bombs are about to expire and it seems like a shame to waste them.

Where gay people take a piss is at the bottom of my concerns.

Add "break their silence" which often translates to "has their lawyers on board".
