Happy New Year

Postby Cadfael » Mon Dec 31, 2018 8:35 pm

A quiet night at home with a few movies. And a few trivial facts about 2018. It wasn't the best year for us. Glad to see a new one. But there were a few good things. For instance.

In 2018, no one drowned in the Lower Wisconsin River.

And my new year's resolution is 1024 x 768.

Back at you. 2018 wasn't a great year for me either. I don't make New Year's resolutions.

To all the Catholics out there: happy circumcision of the baby Jesus. Is today still a holy day of obligation: go to Mass or go to Hell?

What is 1024 x 768?

Holy day of obligation? Yes. Go to Mass or go to Hell? I don't think so.

As a rehabilitated catholic I know when I was a child it was certainly a mortal sin to deliberately skip sunday or holy day mass. Missing it because of Acts of God were acceptable as long as you felt so bad about it that you became physically ill, or at least brought to tears. And there weren't very many Acts of God that qualified.

The new teachings from Vatican II allow much more freedom in that there's lots more reasons you can miss mass. But they kept the part where if you don't go because you just don't wanna, it's a mortal sin. And if you die with the deepest blackest mark of just one mortal sin on your pristine white soul, you do indeed go to hell. Ya gotta run to a priest, tell him all about it, say a bunch of hail maries and our fathers, and then you're okay. But if you die before that, to hell with you.

OR, take him to brunch and drink bloody Marys.

With some priests, that would certainly work.

I might be misremembering a parochial school lesson, but I believe that if you are wearing a scapula (or something) at the time of death, the Blessed Virgin Mary would intercede no matter how bad we were, and we wouldn't have to go to hell. So if you need a little insurance....

Scapular. There are threads galore on the catholic forums discussing whether or not that is true. In some of them, a few reverent souls appear to be on the verge of breaking a couple commandments.

Man, I haven't thought this much about Catholicism in twenty years. My most vivid memory is of one of my fellow altar boys hopping on his bike while wearing his cassock so he could fly it behind him like a cape. And it did, till it got caught between the bike wheel and the frame and went ZZZZZZZZZ till he stopped and found he'd ground a foot-long hole in the back. Father Posco got really mad.

Thanks. The nuns who promoted this belief were very insistent upon it, although they were also insistent upon practically everything. It's kind of a stupid thing to believe when you think about it. I mean, Mary has the power to veto God's sentence of Hell because someone happened to be wearing a scapular thingy? That's not even remotely plausible.
