Black Friday, Cyber week

Postby Shorty » Thu Nov 15, 2018 4:15 pm

The big day is here next week already. Have you figured out the stores and websites you will hit?

One of the nice things about being in an older family is, we quit gifts and give to charity instead.

We still give gifts and we still don't do Black Friday.

I don't think I've ever shopped on a Black Friday. It doesn't sound very appealing.

There was a similar Black Friday thread in 2017. Thanks for not going back to that one.

I've got a 14-year old computer I would like to replace, but I'm not willing to spend much time and effort wading through the crowds. I don't really need a lot of fancy stuff. I expect this to be the last computer I get before I die. My problem is I like Macs, and I like cheap, so I'm looking for a good deal. This might be the first Black Friday I actually shop.

Do you think you might get a deal on a Mac? I'm considering them, but they are pricey. Didn't know they ever had sales.

I got a floor model Imac, a few years ago, at Willy Tech shop, at Willy & Livingston. It came with two years Apple Care.

most of us do both and have a tendency to wait until about 23. december and 4. january -- the deadline pressure almost invariably leading to many ingenious choices . . .

I thought by now people realized my Black Friday posts were mostly jabs at the whole thing. I don't like the commercialism, hype, crowded stores and traffic just to get a good deal or two either.

But I will say if you go places where there won't be stampedes or car crashes, and the weather isn't great for outdoors, what's wrong with walking around shopping places and saving a little money? After spending Thanksgiving indoors stuffing yourselves and visiting relatives, it's nice to get out of the house and be with other people. Going to a gym is better but will only take a couple hours at most. I'd rather go shopping than sit in a movie theater usually.

But many of the deals can be gotten online starting Black Friday, the weekend, Cyber Monday and now Cyber week. I do participate in that and don't see what's so bad about it.

I understand that some people look forward to it and make a day of it and really like it. The fact that I don't is not a criticism of anyone else.

I usually don't go out at all because I don't enjoy being served by people who don't have the day off because their bosses, who DID take the day off, want more profit.

Occasionally I let myself get dragged out to a movie or something. But no shopping.

Sounds like you are talking about Thanksgiving day shopping, which I usually don't do. I was talking about Friday and the weekend. Many people have to work those days.

If you go to a movie on Thanksgiving, you are still supporting bosses who didn't give employees the day off.

The people who go shopping on Black Friday are people who got the day off. They are the reason the day was given the name.

The people serving them are people who want to take the day off, but can't. I don't see how that sounds like Thanksgiving.

Black Friday does not include the weekend. It's one day.

it's called black friday because it brings some companies above break-even and one works on a ledger with two ink pens -- black for normal, positive balances, and red for negative, isn't it?

though the short-straw labour explanation provides equal time in an exquisitely simple and undeniable way . . . though i also know of cash-register operators who volunteered for the day in the past because the absolute number of items scanned divided by time logged in on the register or at the time clock was a secondary performance measure which could lead to some very nice bonuses when all was said and done at the end of the month . . .

For some of them yes. For a whole lot of others that I know there ain't no bonus. There's just "Would you like to keep your job? I've got a pile of applications I can replace you with, and they'll work when I tell 'em to."

Thirty years ago I was in the same position so maybe I'm a little biased.
