obnoxious advertising

Postby gozer » Thu Jul 23, 2015 7:17 am

i put this in current affairs/other because it can be television, it can be radio, it can be over the internet or in print but in general it seems like the quality of advertising is taking a dive and some presents other issues. what is the worst in your estimation?

i will start:
all of the recent television advertising by the liberty mutual insurance company is infra dig for a company in their business and i'm not so sure about the ethics of what they are advertising to begin with

which brings me to the internet and radio advertising for firms that promise to clean up companies' bad reputations on line. u will go to hell for that

I hated those Mad City Sales car ads on the radio. Dealer for the people...I don't think so. Luckily, I haven't heard them lately.

Or the segments that look like a news interview (aired during newscasts) about shocking statistics about burglaries, and how they can be prevented by the security system they happen to be selling.

The V-8 ad where the white, female gym trainer hits the black man on the forehead while he's doing sit-ups because he hasn't had his vegetables.

The Stanton Optical ads with Japanese Kabuki voices.

As someone with no other method of listening to music in the car besides the radio, trust me, they are still around and they are hands-down the most annoying ads in the history of annoying ads. The hucksterism, the voices, the lies, the lame attempts at humor... Steve Ganser and Pat McNamar are my two top candidates for People Most Deserving Of A Throat Punch, an award I very much would like to deliver personally.

There should be a special place in HELL for advertisers whose ads start automatically on the net.

Have to agree with gozer that the Liberty Mutual are among the worst.

A couple others bother me as well. The Willow Curve which is a complete sham w/no benefits beyond placebo.

Another is PCMatic/MyCleanPC (take your pick, both same company). They are the worst antivirus out there by far. To prove a point, I formatted a new drive and installed Windows 7 and PCMatic only. It informed me that I had over 500 issues that needed attention: and if I wanted to buy the product it would fix my PC that had zero problems.

there is that one with the corporate type who asks her for the "elevator pitch" then patronisingly tells her she should be a spokesperson -- the simmering class war dynamic and sarcasm makes it the worst by far. jan should have thrown some coffee on the yuppie in such a hurry instead of sinking to her level -- that would make for a much better advertisement.
