News sites telling me "what you need to know."

I also don't need to know what anybody tweeted this morning.

Couple the above with "breaking news" which is way overused. It used to be for major stories that just occurred. Now it has been watered down to include news that is relatively unimportant and sometimes already reported.

It's a malapropism, an unintentional amalgam of verbiage and garbage. I kinda like it for its earnest pomposity.

Ugh, hate that phrase. It feels like it assumes that whoever the media is interested in has some obligation to be talking ... and if not, they're being (suspiciously) silent.

Hey, that's just referring to parts of speech that aren't nounage.

"jaw dropping"
"eye popping"

used as a substitute for a wide array of adjectives from "exceptional" to "shocking."

Eye popping in particular creeps me out (well, think about it), but that's not the point. It's lazy writing.

Was that a parody post? If not: damn, that's some A-level ignorance.

Banning trite phrases is not who we are.

Pj, remember gay rights, parades, and all the rest in the 80s and 90s? Now we have gay marriage as the law of the land, gay people are generally out instead of generally closeted, and except for some holdouts in Alabama or up north, it's not really an issue any more (well, that's idealized, but we've come a long long way). Look at the variety of people the Democrats just elected to Congress.

Transgender people today are where gay people were in maybe 1985. They are breaking through to general awareness and beginning to be taken seriously as a group deserving of not only civil rights but public respect. It'll come, I believe, but each of us individually has to adjust our thinking just like we did decades ago regarding gayness.

Saying you don't care where people piss (and I believe you mean well) is just like saying in 1985 you didn't care who slept with who. It misses the point. The idea isn't to not care (in that you don't hate anybody for these activities) but instead, to openly welcome transgender people's open presence.

I got to know my first transgender person more than 35 years ago, but until recently they were like black swans, rarely noted. Now they're all over the place, at least in my life. Whether they were all over the place before and I didn't know, or the whole scene has changed, I can't tell you. But this genie is not going back in its little bottle, and the sooner we are friendly and kind about trans-ness the same as we learned to be affirming about the gay people in our lives, the better. The pronoun thing is sort of symbolic and awkward, but we get used to it or retreat into curmudgeonhood, if that's a word.

It's an imperfect world and all of us mess up. But saying we don't care is like "don't ask, don't tell" and not a tenable solution.

Yeah, actually this is who we are. We're humans, and we do shitty things sometimes.

Exactly.

Whenever I see that phrase used, I think about how our nation was built on slavery, genocide, imperialism, racism and exploitation of workers. Usually “not who we are” refers to doing something very much in line with our shitty past.

I think it mostly means "this is not how we would like to think of ourselves".
Collectively, self-awareness is not one of our nation's strengths.

"unintentional amalgam"
"earnest pomposity"

Only English or Journalism majors talk like that.

Bad guess. It was anthropology, of all things. No excuses -- it was a totally useless major but I was lazy and preoccupied in those days.

I agree most people wouldn't talk that way, but written and spoken English diverge. Try reading a transcript of a Donald Trump speech if you want to see what I mean.
