PFAS Water Contamination

Postby Shorty » Mon Sep 24, 2018 3:32 pm

I heard about this on NPR. More bad stuff could be in our drinking water.

https://toxicsaction.org/issues/pfas-wa ... amination/

"PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, is the toxic Teflon chemical found in non-stick pans and firefighting foam used at military bases across the country. The chemicals are linked to cancers, kidney disorders and more, and are estimated to be in the drinking water of more than 110 million people in the United States."

"REPORT: UP TO 110 MILLION AMERICANS COULD HAVE PFAS-CONTAMINATED DRINKING WATER
PFAS Tap Water Data Was Funded By Taxpayers But Kept Secret

"More than 1,500 drinking water systems across the country may be contaminated with the nonstick chemicals PFOA and PFOS, and similar fluorine-based chemicals, a new EWG analysis shows. This groundbreaking finding comes the same day the Environmental Protection Agency is convening a summit to address PFAS chemicals – a class of toxic chemicals that includes PFOA and PFOS, and that are linked to cancer, thyroid disease, weakened immunity and other health problems.

From 2013 to 2015, the EPA mandated national testing for PFAS chemicals in public water systems, yet the full results of this testing, funded by taxpayers, were never made public. Water utilities with the highest concentrations of PFAS chemicals have been publicly identified. But the names of utilities with detectable PFAS contamination below the so-called reporting levels of 10 to 90 parts per trillion, or ppt, were not released. Millions of people were not informed that their water supply is contaminated with these chemicals."

Don't worry, after Trump's EPA guts even more environmental regulations and reports, we won't hear about these bothersome news stories any more.

Three years later, Wisconsin hasn't stopped toxic chemical flow
https://madison.com/wsj/news/local/govt ... 3BEF2C94B1

"Across the country, PFAS compounds have been released from military installations that used heat-resistant firefighting foam, and from businesses that applied impermeable, nonstick coatings to items such as frying pans, microwave popcorn bags, pizza boxes, carpeting and fabric.

Heavy concentrations have been found in groundwater near at least a half-dozen Wisconsin locations, including the state Air National Guard base on Madison’s North Side. Lower PFAS levels have been detected a mile away in drinking water pumped by a municipal well on East Washington Avenue. Concentrations in Well 15 water have tested below federal health advisory levels.

However, more is being learned about health effects, and government agencies disagree on whether the advisory is adequate. It doesn’t take into account a major federal study President Donald Trump’s administration tried to suppress last summer, and it only addresses two of the more than 3,000 PFAS compounds that have been created. Five of the compounds were detected at Well 15."

That will take a bit of time. Faster to just defund NPR. And just like that, no more bothersome news.

Madison to step up testing for toxic PFAS in drinking water
https://madison.com/wsj/news/local/govt ... 3BEF2C94B1

"Starting in January, Madison’s water utility will step up its testing for toxic chemicals that are spreading from highly contaminated soil and groundwater at Truax Air National Guard Base on the city’s North Side. Fluorinated compounds, known as PFAS, from military firefighting foam have soaked into soil and shallow groundwater on the base, and last year the chemicals turned up in low levels nearly a mile away at Madison Water Utility’s Well 15 on East Washington Avenue. The Air National Guard has known about the contamination for at least three years but hasn’t monitored its spread, so there’s no way to know if or when the levels in Well 15 waters will rise to more dangerous levels."
