Election voter suppression

Postby Beaver » Sun Nov 20, 2016 7:57 pm

Hillary would have won without voter suppression.

Wisconsin’s “epidemic” of voter suppression
Trump won by 27,000 votes, and 300,000 registered voters lacked the proper credentials
http://isthmus.com/opinion/opinion/vote ... -election/

“there were a significant number of people who didn’t vote because of this. If you make something harder to do, less people are going to do it.” But the problem was much bigger in Milwaukee, where nearly 60,000 fewer votes were cast this year than in 2012. As The Capital Times reported, “Clinton earned about 43,000 fewer votes in the Democratic stronghold than Obama did four years ago.” Given that Donald Trump won the state by just 27,000 votes, that 43,000 margin by itself made the difference."

This is no fun, but there is a lot that we don't know. We don't know who these folks would have voted for. We can assume most of them would have vote for Hillary, but we don't know if the margin would be enough. We also don't know how many of those potential voters would have stayed home anyway. There wasn't the same enthusiasm for Hillary that there had been for Barack. I'm opposed to the whole fake voter fraud issue. But I don't think we can definitively say that it decided the election. It will be studied for years, so we may know eventually.

Beaver: it's not clear the voter ID law was responsible. Take a look at the New York Times web site, it has a great article up on District 15, an inner city Milwaukee district (mostly black) where voter turnout was down 19.5% from 2012. It suggests (and comments from voters do to) that lack of enthusiasm for the candidates ("It was like a choice between broccoli and liver") was mostly to blame.

It is good that the UW Political Science Dept. will do a study on the effect of the voter I.D. law.

You may be correct: the loss was by such a small margin that it could have had to do with the law but I think it is more likely due to lack of enthusiasm for Clinton and/or Trump. I would also suggest that Bernie Sanders would have won the election had he been the Democratic candidate, regardless of the new voter ID law.

Could be a little of both. Apathetic voters are unlikely to get an id even if it's easy.

In a sane world, the DoJ would step in and defend these rural counties from these racist attacks. Instead, we have noted fan of southern culture J. Beauregard Sessions as AG.

Meanwhile, Putin assures Trump that Russia didn't really mess with our elections. And that's good enough for the Trump administration.

Thousands of Milwaukee voters may have had registration erased

"If people, particularly people who have already registered, show up on election day and are denied the right to vote, that's a serious problem," Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said at a morning City Hall news conference.

Barrett said the problem is due to inconsistencies in the way data is entered into the system by the U.S. Postal Service and the Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles.

How about if we suppress the illegal alien vote only?

Repeating another unsubstantiated Trump claim. Otherwise known as a lie.

Riiiight!!! Tell that to the people in Chicago.
Municipal ID cards that Mayor Rahm Emanuel is launching for undocumented immigrants and others will be a valid form of identification for people both registering to vote and voting in Chicago, according to a letter aldermen received Friday.

h r c would have won wisconsin and several other middle western states if her state and local campaigns and possible voters weren't lulled into complacency by incompetent and/or corrupt pollsters and dumbfuck pundits and a predominantly batshit crazy communications staff thinking that saying she was a number of points ahead over and over again amd there is no trump path to 270 electoral votes would just cause it to happen . . .

it does work on wall street- the "pump" in "pump & dump" but this was another kettle of fish entirely . . .
