Packers 2018 Draft

Postby Cornelius Gotchberg » Fri Apr 27, 2018 9:28 am

Brian Gutekunst trades from 14 down to 27, then back up to 18, and ends up getting the player they would have taken at 14 AND the Saints' 2019 1st rounder.

Not a bad first day!

GO PACKERS!!!

Yes yahoo likes it. But they need a WR.

"Green Bay has been more aggressive with Gutekunst. He was masterful in the first round on Thursday."

@Beaver;

"But they need a WR.''

That they do, but (IMHO) that position has an above average high pick/under-performance correlation.

Drafting logic suggests two early round priority positions on each side of the ball: QB & blind side tackle on offense (GB is covered), and edge rusher & CB on defense.

Gutekunst? Packer Nation may be onto something here. I must confess my questioning Mark Murphy's picking him ahead of Eliot Wolf has subsided.

Let's see him follow up with some value picks, they only have one today, and this is a DEEP draft.

One more thing:

AFTER FURTHER REVIEW, THE bares STILL SUCK!!

Gotta like Josh Jackson on the board @45.

Glass half empty? Antuan Edwards & Fred Vinson drafted 1-n-2 in '99?

Glass half full? He should have (2 pick 6's against Bucky!) gone in the 1st round!

@Beaver;

Rodgers can't throw to them.

That'll be a privilege reserved for other QB's...my Kingdom for another Cryin' Jay Cutler!

Rest assured, they've got their eyes on one and recall, Antonio Freeman was a 3rd rounder, Donald Driver went in the 7th; there's always value in later rounds and rookie free agency.

Opponent passing stats show a Gawd Awful 2017 Packers' pass defense, and is probably the main reason Capers was pink-slipped.

Completion %: 67.84% (30th)
Pass YP/G: 236.8 (21st)
Pass YP/A: 7.4 (29th)
Passing first downs P/G: 13.2 (31st)
Passing TDs P/G: 1.9 (30th)
Average passer rating P/G: 102.0 (31st)

It's a passing league, and with these two, a healthy Kevin King, a more experienced Josh Jones, & the rest of 'em it'll make the defensive secondary a lot more solid.

I look for them to address offense today.

GO PACKERS!!!

Aaron Rodgers is happy. Heck, why wouldn't he be; he's dating MEGA-BABE Danica Patrick after all.

Three other reasons? J’Mon Moore in the 4th, Marquez Valdes-Scantling in the 5th, & Golden Domer Equanimeous St. Brown in the 6th.

Moore is a two time 1000 yard + receiver, all three are at least 6' 3'', & St. Brown is 6' 5''. Counting Moore’s pro day, all ran sub 4.5 40s. And what GREAT first names, am I right?

What's not to like?

For purely sentimental reasons, I would've preferred that the Packers had drafted Jester Weah, formerly of Memorial HS, in the 7th round, or at least signed him as an undrafted free agent before Texas did.

At least his Memorial teammate, Darius Fountain, was drafted in the 5th by the Colts. Hope he gets lots of Luck in passes thrown to him.

Some of my kids knew Weah and Fountain back in HS. From what I heard, those are two really great guys.

@Paleo2;

Agreed, just a great young man!

Funny story; I was in Sam's Club ~ 5 years ago when I recognized him in line ahead of me wearing a JMM hoodie.

I grabbed him gently by the arm and said "you're Jester Weah and you go to Memorial, right?''

I startled him because he drew back and his eyes got as big as saucers. After I introduced myself, congratulated him on his senior season, and told him I played FB there 40 years ago (Class of '73), he broke into a big toothy grin.

After we parted, I thought, "Holy shit, his parents weren't even born when I went there.''

Anywho, I see him as the kind of person that will succeed not because of what he does or who he knows, but because of who he is.

From the Green Bay Packer's website:

Full name is Equanimeous Tristan Imhotep J. St. Brown

My question:

What does the 'J' stand for?

Yikes! Try saying THAT three times fast.

What does the 'J' stand for?

Hopefully his nickname. The burning question: what is short for Equanimeous (per Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary: “calm emotions when dealing with problems or pressure.” ?

I now remember reading about him in SI a couple of years ago, his brothers sport equally unique names.

Intriguing kid (offered by LSU, USC, & Stanford) with an interesting backstory.

He'll look GREAT in the Green-n-Gold.

I heard some stories about him at that time.

Thing is, most Memorial kids like to eat out of the HS for lunch. Many of them walk places, but most seniors (and some juniors) drive. Jester was well known for being the guy who would take anyone he recognized into his car. One of my kids had a class with him when he was a senior and she was a freshman, so she sometimes got rides back with him. Being a concerned parent I looked into whether he was the sort of guy who would take advantage of a naive freshman.

Nope.

He was the type of guy who was always nice and friendly and helpful to everyone, and he gave rides to everyone. Jester was a complete gentleman.

The "J" in St. Brown's name is for his Father, John.

GREAT SI article, more recent (09/2017) than the one I posted above.

https://www.si.com/college-football/201 ... ers-family

4.0 GPA student St. Brown ran a 4:37 40 at the combine. A similarly 6' 5'' but 10 pounds lighter WR ran a 4:38 20 years ago.

The name Randy Moss ring a bell?
