Football Badgers Rank #9 in B1G Recruiting

Postby pjbogart » Thu Feb 08, 2018 8:32 am

The Badgers, who won the Orange Bowl in December, rank #44 nationally and an anemic #9 in the Big Ten.

Full Rankings

Ohio State #2
Penn State #5
Michigan #21
Nebraska #22
Maryland #28
Michigan State #32
Minnesota #35
Iowa #40
Wisconsin #44
Indiana #48
Purdue #49
Illinois #54
Rutgers #57
Northwestern #59

I know that Gary Anderson complained that the Athletic Department didn't do enough to make sure his recruits were admitted to the University. Is that the issue here? How can a team that consistently wins its division, goes to a bowl, wins the bowl and finishes in the Top 25 (Top Ten?) recruit so poorly? Jim Leonhard was a good hire but how long will it be before a team that recruits well lures him to a bigger stage?

The 2019 recruiting class is off to a hell of a good start; unless things fall apart, it should be the highest ranked class in school history. I have very few concerns with recruiting under this staff.

Jim Leonhard is a good example why Wisconsin doesn't have to go after the barely literate ego-maniac jock. Many of the best players Wisconsin gets come in without a lot of fanfare, but they are smart, coachable and hardworking. A good number aren't even given scholarships, but earn their way onto the field and starting positions.

I'm not worried about it. I wouldn't be surprised if the senior class of this year's 13-1 team wasn't ranked very highly either.

Bucky does what they do with walk-ons, 2's, 3's and a smattering of 4 stars.

What is it they do?

Wisconsin has played in 15 (now 16) consecutive bowl games, which is tied for the sixth-longest active streak in the FBS behind Florida State, Virginia Tech, Georgia, Oklahoma and LSU.

Between 2010 and 2016, the Badgers signed only 20 four-star players and no five-star prospects, according to ESPN.com's rankings. That figure ranked seventh in the Big Ten, behind the total four- and five-star signings of Ohio State (103), Michigan (72), Penn State (49), Nebraska (37), Michigan State (34) and Maryland (23). Yet Wisconsin won 71 games during that span, the second most among conference teams behind Ohio State's 79 victories.

Former walk-ons include Abbrederis, Alex Erickson, Schobert, Stave, Ogunbowale, Cichy, the eldest Watt, & a fella by the name of Jimmy Leonhard.
