Winter Olympics

Why does Russia cause so many problems?

Russia Banned From Winter Olympics by I.O.C.
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/05/spor ... mpics.html

"Russia’s Olympic team has been barred from the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The country’s government officials are forbidden to attend, its flag will not be displayed at the opening ceremony and its anthem will not sound. Any athletes from Russia who receive special dispensation to compete will do so as individuals wearing a neutral uniform, and the official record books will forever show that Russia won zero medals...

The International Olympic Committee, after completing its own prolonged investigations that reiterated what had been known for more than a year, handed Russia penalties for doping so severe they were without precedent in Olympics history. The ruling was the final confirmation that the nation was guilty of executing an extensive state-backed doping program. "

Too bad they weren't as bad at hiding their cheating in our election.
I say we don't let 'em vote in the next one.

Poor Ashley. Hope she isn't another Tonya Harding.

"“I’m furious. I am absolutely furious,” Wagner told reporters. “For me to put out two programs that I did at this competition as solid as I skated and to get those scores, I am furious. “I want to be on that Olympic team, and I’m really mad that I’m in this position again.”"

Norway benefits from a large number of events in a couple key sports. Basically the equivalent of the USA with swimming. Biathlon has 8 or 9 gold medals awarded, while more popular sports such as Hockey, Basketball, Tennis, and Soccer only have 2 each.

I was lukewarm about watching the Olympics at the start, but I found myself tuning in from time to time and enjoying it. I didn't watch it all by any means, and I didn't schedule my life around it like I do for football. I caught a few hockey games. I loved the women's gold medal match. I also watched some biathlon and cross country skiing, some bobsled and some skiing and snowboarding. I mostly stayed away from ice skating. Curling is kind of boring, but I did see the Korean women silver medal match and the US men take the gold medal match.

One thing I did make an effort to see was the Jamaican women's bobsled team. My daughter made me watch Cool Runnings about 50 times when she was little. She loved that movie, so I watched the women's effort this year on her behalf.

Did the coverage seem a bit scant to anyone else?

Dish even had a shortcut to a 4-way split screen of the 4 channels supposedly providing Olympic coverage. We never saw more than 3 channels with content (and I think that happened only once- it was generally just 2 channels). And, at times, the two available channels were showing the same thing.

It was on three channels most nights on Charter spectrum. NBC and two cable channels. They showed different sports. Was all the coverage I needed.
