What is the cause of the Opioid epidemic?

Opioid epidemic now taking more lives than car crashes
https://www.channel3000.com/news/opioid ... /980915268

"Nearly 800 people die from opioid overdoses every week in this country. The chances of dying from an overdose now exceed the chances of dying in a car crash. It's something we are seeing right here in Madison. Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney says his department responds to more than a dozen overdose calls a week. "

People like to get high. Some choose exercise, some choose academics, some choose making music, some choose sex, some choose booze, some choose weed, etc...but some make the grave mistake of choosing the heavy stuff, and most of them get gobbled up quickly into a life of dependence. Sooner or later, that dependence kills them. I don't personally know any junkies anymore: my personal friends who were into that stuff OD'd many years ago, after decades of dependence, methadone, and more dependence.....that's what causes it- the need to get high and then maintain that on a daily or bi-daily or weekly basis. But bottom line is people like to get high on something, not just drugs.

The cause of the opioid epidemic is capitalism.

How the problem began

The rise of the global prescription opioid epidemic started in the 1990s. At that time, pain specialists and advocacy organisations in the United States began to argue that the nation faced an epidemic of untreated pain. In turn, the American Pain Society advocated for the recognition of pain as the “fifth vital sign” and an increasing number of professional and consumer groups pushed for the increased use of opioids for pain management. Coinciding with this shift in medical perspective was the introduction and extensive marketing of OxyContin (oxycodone) for the treatment of non-malignant pain. OxyContin sales representatives visited doctors across the United States, leaving them with gifts, free patient samples, and invitations to all-expenses-paid symposia — all actions that are known to impact prescribing[2]. The widespread adoption of opioids for pain relief was further facilitated by marketing strategies that downplayed OxyContin’s addictive potential and targeted primary care doctors[3], who continue to prescribe the majority of opioid pain relievers in many nations[4].

Those people are addicted to opioids because rich white men want them to be.
