Naaah, I'd just be correcting the Frautschi's omission.

140 million after taxes is not a small amount of money, but so far the winner, her partner, two of their children and probably a third have quit their jobs.

The article did mention the presence of a financial adviser. Hopefully it's not a relative.

That has to be calculated wrong. A quick trip through my software shows minimum federal tax due of $76,000,000 on her $197.4. Add in state tax and she walks away with ~ $110,000,000. Nothing to sneeze at but still 22% lower than mentioned.

But what if you won? Someone will, you know. You could run against Trump! Oh what fun it would be, calling your opponents losers and saying any stupid thing you want and rising in the polls.
President Beaver. Think about it!

what i like is that powerball is named after a drug: powerball used to be methylphenidate + morphine or hydromorphone or pentazocine with or without antihistamines, barbiturates, and/or cocaine. now powerball and speedball are used to denote any mixture of a hard narcotic and a centrally-acting stimulant. someone who bangs e plus piritramide or dihydromorphine plus cyproheptadine says it works better than viagra and so refers to that recipe as the massive hard-on collider. remember what the cure for hay fever was in the 1930s before antihistamines were invented? amphetamines and opiates - they'd send u home with some white crosses or bennies and maybe a speed inhaler with which to stir your tea and a bottle of laudanum and/or some tubes of codeine to shoot into yer arse cheek and the artillery to do it.

since the chance of winning the jackpot is about 300m to one, buying two tickets is cost effective then.

I bought one on Wednesday. I'll buy one today too. I think that matches my grand total for lottery purchases last year, though.

I can't help but wonder how huge jackpots like this affect the economy. Are restaurants and other retailers negatively impacted when people are encouraged to light their $20 bills on fire and throw them in a trash can? It seems like they would be, particularly retailers who tend to serve lower-income customers. I'd be curious to see the weekly sales trends of McDonald's, Burger King and Wal-Mart (excluding lottery sales). I'm guessing gas stations and liquor stores are doing just fine this week, though.

I've had enough grad-level stats courses to know it is a sucker's bet.

But I'm also greedy enough to allow myself to buy one ticket when the jackpots get to these mega levels. I bought one Wednesday, and I'll buy one today. Because someone has to win...

I buy it when it gets high. I've had the statistics courses, etc., but greed overcomes education at some point. I don't want to fool around with a few million. When it gets over 100 million, I get greedy.

A couple great quotes in that link:

Bashir Rahman, a chef from Moscow, Idaho, who was traveling through Nebraska, said he decided to buy a couple tickets at a Casey's gas station in Lincoln, but he realizes it's a long, long shot.

"You buy more than two, you're just stupid," he said.

The odds are a matter of statistics and probability, but they're facts that most players may not completely understand, said Ron Wasserstein, executive director of the Alexandria, Virginia-based American Statistical Association.
...
"I can assure you," he said, "there is no office pool for the lottery at the American Statistical Association."

The only time I buy a lottery ticket is when I'm asked to join an office pool. A couple bucks is cheap insurance against having said "no" to a fortune if they win. (Which doesn't make sense, because I have no interest in the circus that would surround a lottery win, but somehow being left out seems worse.)

does saying we are looking for bigfoot make winning any more likely? what about thylacines and ivory-billed woodpeckers?

Being left out I can handle, but being the only one LEFT at work I could not.

I haven't bought a lottery ticket in many years. Does Copps sell those?
