Powerball

It's up to $500 million. You could buy the Bucks a new stadium and a casino for the Menominee tribe. Did you waste any money on tickets?

No, but a lot of people are: the PDQ near my house was a madhouse an hour ago.

No. I certainly wouldn't turn the money down, but I'd be very content with a much more modest jackpot like Supercash or Megabucks. I have little need to be famous.

If I had that much $ it would go for education not for entertainment. What shitty priorities some people have.

I only buy a ticket when it gets stupid high, perhaps twice a year or so and even then I only buy one ticket. My father once told me that gambling is a tax on people who are bad at math, but he probably bought one ticket too.

I got one number right and it wasn't the Powerball. I guess I'm not out much.

This thread keeps coming up in different reincarnations every time the jackpot gets above a couple hundred million.

Powerball

What would you do with $425 million?

That latter one was started by someone named "Beaver".

There was some interesting discussion in each of those threads, not just about the bad odds, but about whether becoming suddenly rich actually is good for people or even makes them happy. In a surprising number of cases, suddenly acquiring vast wealth seems to ruin people's lives.

At one point I said this:

kurt_w wrote:So with my $425 million I would build a prototype Dewan/Massie waste-annihilating molten salt reactor in my backyard.

but now I think I'd better get JoeT's advice on whether that seems like a good idea.

All in all, though, we're all probably lucky not to have won:

kurt_w wrote:Still, I'd rather be able to send my daughter off to school every day without worrying that someone would kidnap her for the ransom. I'd like to be able to have ordinary relationships with my friends and relatives without suspecting that they're just after my money.

I cannot imagine wanting $400+ million dollars and I cannot fathom why anybody buys lottery tickets.

Oh well. You knew that.

To pay for things, mostly.

To win the lottery.

About $200M after taxes on the cash option, so you're gonna have to pick one or the other.

Sometimes, albeit rarely, the folks who win these large jackpots actually use the money for a good cause. Now THAT would be a lot of fun to do, dontcha think?

Yes, one could contribute generously to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for the defeat of OSX, iOS, Android and Linux and the Widespread adoption of Windows 10 Everywhere™.

It might be fun to help preserve some land as a nature area, if you got a giant lottery jackpot.

I would manipulate the market for random ubiquitous thrift shop items. Buy as many as I can find and then start paying big bucks for more.

I might buy one of those sweet old historic homes in First Settlement, with a garden. I might be happy in the old Lorraine also.

I'd also want to buy property for the homeless, close to public transportation and services they need.

And help out the arts in Madison public schools.

Don't be such a namist. There are plenty of other young boys who could use your help.
