Yes, I was referring to Hilldale. I was attempting to explain why it was different from the two "Townes". I imagine the reason that you were able to park near the entrance is that the mall is dying. As evidenced by the loss of the two anchor stores. Just like Hilldale would be in trouble if Macy's closed.

We're setting the programmable thermostat to manual and keeping the house warmer tonight so the furnace doesn't have to grind it back up to 70 in the morning. Tossed a half bottle of heet into the gas tank, made sure our dryer vent and the neighbor's where the snow from our driveway ends up were both clear. The sidewalk's nice and clear, there's plenty of coffee and alcohol.

I've got to get up and go someplace in the early morning but after that it's only outside for the dog to pee. And she's been pretty damn quick about it lately.

You're livin' large. Normally I have our furnace set to 68 during waking hours and 65 at night. For this event I set it to 69 at all times. It feels warm now, but from what I'm told the furnace won't be able to maintain that level.

Well, 70 downstairs. About 67 upstairs. And we've decided to trickle water in the utility sink in the basement. Couldn't hurt. And we'll probably save the street from a busted water main.

Here, the thermostat stays at 62 day and night. Probably I wear more clothes indoors than other people but I like feeling all cozy. Also it doesn't take as long to wrap up when I need to take the dog out.

The spare bedroom is closed up now and I'm not going to heat it until this polar thing is over. All the water pipes are on the other side of the house anyway.

I visited somebody a couple days ago and she was walking around in her very warm house wearing a thing like a sun dress, with bare shoulders. This seemed wrong on so many levels, but I kept my mouth shut. I guess it's none of my business.

It was so cold this morning, my Husky asked to come back inside after only 10-15 minutes.

Too cold for Huskies!

37 predicted Sat and 41 Sunday. That will be a 67 and 71 degree increase from tonight's low. Hard to fathom. Like going from 10 to 80 in 3 or 4 days. The weather is out of whack and dangerous.

"Due to extreme temperatures, Greenway Station will be closing today, January 29th, at 5pm and will be reopening Thursday, January 31st, at noon.

Tuesday, January 29th - closing at 5pm
Wednesday, January 30th - closed
Thursday, January 31st - opening at noon

Please call your destination of choice or check their social media channel before venturing out. Stay warm"

"The below stores and restaurants will be open today, January 30th at Hilldale:
Ace Hardware
Bowl of Heaven - Madison - Hilldale (Opening at 12:00 pm)
Dolma's Rejuvenation (Please call ahead)
Dumpling Haus
Macy's
Madison Academy of Music (Please call ahead)
Metcalfe's Market (Closing at 9:00 pm)
Morgan's Shoes
New Balance
Stride Rite
solidcore (Please check their website for class information)

All other stores, restaurants and fitness studios will be closed. Stay warm!"

I know it's not about how cold it is, and these characters are from a whole nother country, but still.

Yes it's very cold but the world is not ending. I went to 3 different jobs yesterday and then went out last night. Bear & Bottle was open and there were a few dozen people there.

And I'm not carrying food and blankets in my car either. I live in a city.

Yeah, the food and blankets thing for in town is nuts unless you are living in your car or living in, say, Iron County.

I remember 96/97 when it was -30 without wind chill and the Essen Haus was almost full, 88/89 changing my girlfriend's battery at -20 (I'm wearing a full face wool hat and three layers while a kid zipped by on his bike delivering papers wearing a bomber jacket and a hat that didn't touch his ears), and sometime in the mid 70's driving a flatbed delivery truck for a machine shop in South Beloit listening to guy on the radio talk about this being the twenty first consecutive day below zero. Everybody complained but nobody stayed home. I think this current "shut down everything!" mindset has more to do with worries about litigation than everyone's welfare.
