Madison Media Institute closing

Madison Media Institute closing at end of year. Too bad, I know people who went there and liked it.

Almost as bad as ITT Tech. Didn't they offer some sort of video game degree? Hee hee.

I didn't know that. As I said, I heard good reports from two people but that was several years ago.

Trans-America School of Broadcasting (which was what MMI was prior to being bought out) is what first brought me to Madison in the early 1990's. Originally planned on only staying a couple months, and then finding a job doing overnights in some small radio market somewhere, but had so much fun my first summer here that I decided to stick around a little bit longer.

Knew quite a few of the instructors who ended up at MMI after the buyout - decent people and very knowledgeable in their field. It is a shame what the new owners did to the institution.

I'm glad this place is shut down. Everyone I've known that went to MMI (including family members) did not end up with any sort of a career in that field as a result of that education. I would go as far to say it was a complete waste of money for them and a scam based on how much money they charged.

While I'm sure there were good instructors and such, the fact is, lots of people want to make money in the music/audio/video field, and I'm not certain there is really that much money to be made in said field. It sounds like a "fun job", and people give the schooling a go, take out loans, etc......... but eventually realize everyone and their brother/sister wants a "cool job recording music", and realize they maybe should look at less "fun" careers instead that have a better chance of actual, gainful employment.

I think most "big shots" in the music recording industry don't care about MMI (or similar) degrees. I'd bet the best producers/audio engineers are self taught and worked their way up the ranks through the school of hard knocks (recording in basements, garages, running live sound at shows) and word-of-mouth...... they didn't just get some degree from a for-profit college and land a big name gig at a recording studio.

The linked article that uwstudent posted was very interesting. Basically, for-profit schools like this that offer degrees that do not lead to gainful employment are scams. They should be (and are being) shut down.

do record companies still enclose an eight-ball of c-jam in their records when sending them to radio stations?

Not true! Over 1 in 1000 Trump University graduates went on to become successful carnival barkers or rodeo clowns.

Buh-bye, MMI
The slated closing of the for-profit college serves as a cautionary tale

Their PR and pedagogy paved the way for Madison's "education" agenda. Lol
