Evers' State of the State

Postby Shorty » Tue Jan 22, 2019 9:38 am

Didn't Walker drop his act 10 bombshell at his first State of the State. Does Evers' have anything up his sleeve? Will people be able to get there during the storm?

"We don't know exactly what Governor Tony Evers is going to cover in Tuesday night’s State of the State address. His office is expected to release excerpts of the speech later this morning, but in his short term he's already made health care an early focus of his administration. That includes pushing to make sure people with pre-existing conditions are guaranteed health coverage if the Affordable Care Act were to be struck down. As a cancer survivor himself, Evers has said it's an important issue to him and many families across the state."

Walker had a complicit legislature to enact his anti-union measure. Evers won't get the same type of cooperation for much of what he will propose.

Great speech. Moved me to tears. So nice not to see Walker up there blabbering. I cried during his speeches, too, for different reasons.

"Here are some of the key proposals from Gov. Evers in last night’s State of the State:

· Expand Medicaid coverage for Wisconsin families.
· Invest in our infrastructure, fix our roads.
· Restore funding to our neighborhood schools, close the achievement gap. Provide additional resources for special education, mental health services, summer school programs, early childhood education, and more.
· Cut taxes by 10% for individuals making up to $100k and families making up to $150k.
· Prioritize safe drinking water and clean wells. Replace lead drinking water lines and secure federal funding for lead prevention and treatment programs.
· Withdraw Wisconsin from federal lawsuit challenging the Affordable Care Act."

It's going to be tough to get that agenda through the Legislature. I support all of it. His best chance for success is probably improving infrastructure/fix roads. Legislature agrees on the tax cut, but there is a big disagreement on how to fund it. That is an issue that they should be able to compromise on.
