House Democrats steamrolled Republicans in an array of districts last week, from those drawn by independent commissions or courts, to seats crafted specifically by Republicans with the intention of keeping them in the GOP column.

If only that was true for Wisconsin.

Dylan Brogan's Isthmus article on the extreme gerrymandering gets a shout-out from the Lawyers, Guns and Money blog.

Dems swept the state-wide races. Dem got 54% of the Assembly votes; but only got 36% of Assembly seats.

Good job, Dylan!

Also, a big fuck you to Robin Vos.

if he can still strike out letters and numbers like thompson proved he could, all they need is a democrat to get "the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog" about 100 times in the bill and the governor could write something almost de novo i suppose . . .

would there be a way to perhaps enact a statute to prevent gerrymandering or at least make it more difficult? how would it work? prioritise known neighbourhood boundaries, stipulate certain geometric parameters such as districts must be as close to a square as practicable and some reasons for it being otherwise such as the above allowed and others not, like deliberately redistricting someone out of office and situations patently counter to the spirit of the voting rights act* and so on and so forth? in the case of the state general assembly give every single township, village, city, and urban neighbourhood a representative? elect everyone at-large?

Vos refused to release redistricting legal contract

Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos won't release a $850,000 contract with a legal firm helping the GOP defend legislative district boundaries.

Vos spokeswoman Kit Beyer declined to release the contract to the newspaper, saying it was subject to attorney-client privilege. She declined to answer questions from the newspaper Monday.

Wisconsin Freedom of Information President Bill Lueders said he believes denial of the newspaper's request is illegal.

What's Vos trying to hide?

Would probably just reveal that they did knowingly gerrymander. Which everyone but the most willfully blind partisan knows anyway. But it would be proof that even the courts couldn't ignore.
Who am I kidding? Of course they could ignore it if their donors want them to.
