Sad news from Rome. No relation to the Massimo who posts here, of course.

Italian police arrest homeless man in death of UW student
http://www.channel3000.com/news/italian ... t/40361708

"Police identified the suspect as Massimo Galioto, a 40-year-old from Rome. In a statement Tuesday, police said he was taken into custody because he was "seriously implicated" in the murder."

Update: http://www.channel3000.com/news/Autopsy ... s/40381496

"In an interview a day earlier, with Italian RAI state TV, Pennachioli said Solomon had been robbed by two Moroccan men, and that after he descended from the bridge to one of the Tiber's banks, he was "agitated, and had a fight" with Galioto. "It ended badly," she said on RAI. Solomon "pushed, Max pushed back. He pushed a second time. Max pushed again," Pennachioli told RAI. Solomon was "drunk and tumbled over" into the water, she said.

Although most of the river winds through the city placidly during summer, just downstream where the alleged scuffle took place is a small rapid, and concrete and rocks line much of the Tiber's banks. Solomon's credit cards were used on Friday in Milan, and police are investigating whether other, still unidentified people, had robbed him."

Doesn't it feel about right how data has come back in this case?
i.e. - the Italians are using enhanced survailance to the benifit of the public (it's touching WI presently & I'm impressed).
We are not allowed to let that happen here - it seems.
Sad but - sadly understandable ;(

Being drunk and alone in a foreign country opens the door for all kinds of negative consequences. Tragic ending.

I enjoy pasta but can't eat it often...too many carbs. Bad news for tourists in central Italy.

Italy earthquake leaves 63 dead, towns in ruins
http://www.cnn.com/2016/08/23/europe/it ... index.html

"A strong, shallow earthquake devastated towns in central Italy early Wednesday, killing at least 63 people and leaving rescuers desperately digging through the rubble to free survivors. The 6.2-magnitude earthquake badly damaged villages in a mountainous rural area of central Italy, a popular vacation spot usually bustling with tourists during the summer break. CNN affiliate Rai reported 63 dead, but the toll is expected to rise as rescue teams reach the remote sites where the damage is worst."

Italy may be falling apart. Is USA next?

Genoa collapse: Hundreds more bridges 'at risk' across Italy as ministers blast highways firm
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/0 ... ministers/

Up to 300 bridges, viaducts and tunnels in Italy are at risk of structural failure, experts warned, as the death toll from the collapse of a bridge in Genoa rose to 39, including three children...

"If external constraints prevent us from spending to have safe roads and schools, then it really calls into question whether it makes sense to follow these rules," Mr Salvini, who leads the eurosceptic League party, said. "There can be no trade-off between fiscal rules and the safety of Italians."The European Union pushed back against suggestions EU budget rules might be to blame. "We will not engage in any political finger pointing," the European Commission, the EU's executive in Brussels, said...

Around 70 per cent of Italy’s 15,000 motorway bridges and tunnels are more than 40 years old, many of them built during the post-war boom but now carrying far more traffic than they were designed for. Lack of investment, poor maintenance and, in some cases, the involvement of mafia-run building companies that use poor quality concrete to increase profits, could all contribute to disasters like the one in Genoa. “They have problems that, if not addressed in time, could potentially lead to structural failures,” a leading structural engineer told La Repubblica newspaper."
