It's been years, but I've taken the Metra from Harvard to their station under what was then called the Sears Tower. Cabbed it from there.

Free parking at the Harvard station.

Hwy.14 (Rand Rd.) runs along side most of the northwestern railbed.
You could also take the Van Galder to O'Hare and take the L in.
I preferred the train. People are real aggressive drivers down there.

Dopey waste of time. Taken out of context. The "L" is mostly elevated. Duh. And Chicago is one of the few cities dense enough to support the infrastructure needed for rail-based mass transit as a component to their overall transit offering.

I hate to say it, but you're almost right. I think a metro area of a million would be enough. Which includes the Twin Cities, but nowhere in Wisconsin. So I'm not being a homer.

Honestly, the TC aren't big enough.

I was just in Chicago 2 weeks ago and all was well. Stayed near Harry Caray's on Kenzie, walked everywhere day and late night with no problems at all. A few aggressive panhandlers but nothing I haven't had in the Walgreen's parking lot here.

I do laugh at people who complain about parking rates in downtown Madison. We left the car in a private ramp from Fri afternoon till Sun morning. $94

Why would march a poster off to their certain death? Why, Ned, why?

That was nine years ago, beans. I can't believe you went back and dug it up.

Excellent.

Not too hard to find old posts. Nice to see that Ned's views have evolved over time, isn't it? :)

More on-topic: Chicago is a blast to visit. Don't be afraid of cities; just be aware of your surroundings and don't make yourself a victim (blatantly displaying cash, being drunk and lost at 2 am, etc.).

Not good to say these days. As in "had a blast in Europe".

Traffic is a good reason to avoid the windy city.

When I moved to Madison in '93 I met a nice couple, 30's, UW grads, who lived in Sun Prarie. They asked where I liked to go for a beer & hang. I said, "Mickeys on Willy St."
They replied, with very serious faces, "Willy Street? Be careful. That's all drug dens, crack houses. It's a very dangerous neighborhood."
I chuckled and said,"Dangerous? I grew up in Chicago. Willy Street is quaint."

Chicago is a mess, but every major metro area is.
Chicago is expensive, but every major metro are is.
Is Chicago unsafe?
Not unless you are visiting areas with high crime/gang violence.

So get a grip Goldilocks. Get off the computer & go see some real art up close.
There's no good reason not to.

Now there's a band name. Or maybe a pulp fiction character name for a hands-on enforcer.

I had a friend from Verona (had, past tense) who warned her adult daughter not to go to the Willy St Coop alone.

Her mom was probably afraid that the coop was going to turn her into a vegan.

Actually did that instead.
I KNOW how stupid that sounds.
I KNOW I have a somewhat - but not completely - irrational fear of Chicago.
