Chicago scared us off

Postby Mad Howler » Mon Mar 21, 2016 10:06 pm

Thought about visiting the Chicago Institute of Art.
While looking into the privatized parking options it became clear from web searching that there is an ambient level of violence in Chicago that edges too much toward random riskiness. So - we're not going to make that trip. Perhaps, I am overreacting - but I have *never* found Chicago welcoming & over the last few decades it has only gotten exponentially worse in that respect.
It is a shame as the Chicago Institute of Art has a collection that the young'n shouldn't miss given its proximity.

They're scaring us here too.

Seriously, I have two friends who made that trip in the past year. It always amazed me how many folks from the burbs never went into the "city".

The thing is I never knew how to navigate the practical aspects of how to navigate that city.
How to avoid traffic stalls worse than LA, where to park (other than the garage by Soldier) when attending museums, ... generally how to get to the cool stuff without hassle. That is leaving out many other ethnic quarters of the city I have no idea how to approach.
I've finally got to the point to want to go - have gotten over most of my misgivings & was ready to try. Then - I've been "scared" away by what is see as a reasonable threat of violence.
Perhaps I have always held the potential of elevated levels violence in my "misgivings".
My heart goes out to those live with that & seek to escape it.
To me - Chicago is a complicated dance.

We usually get to Chicago once a year. I have to say that I'm usually surprised by how nice the people are. I certainly don't enjoy driving down there, and not only due to traffic. The side streets are in very bad shape and parking is hard to find and expensive. I've never actually felt unsafe there. Maybe I should have.

There is parking within the Loop but it's pricey. If you're coming down from WI I'd recommend parking at the Cumberland Park & Ride and take the Blue Line in. You can get the 1-day Ventra tickets for $10 and take the L or the buses anywhere.

My 13-year-old daughter spent two days wandering around the city last year with her 25-year-old cousin, with my permission. She had a blast.

Really, just go you'll have fun.

Some people are even afraid of going to Park St. in Madison.

Take the trains dummy. Super easy and cheap.

I took the train from ORD to downtown yesterday for $2.50. There's a Park and Ride lot in Park Ridge right off the Kennedy.

That was nine years ago, beans. I can't believe you went back and dug it up.

Excellent.
