Beer week 2016

Postby david cohen » Sun May 01, 2016 4:19 pm

A nice thread to expound upon you experiences:)

I hit Dexters today for the Founders/Evil Twin tap takeover. Some great off the wall beers, strong and expensive but worthy of this type of event. But for a rather rude drunk, who couldn't hold onto his glass (smash) and clearly was wasted at 1pm, it was a great time. Sorry I missed the Dogfish Head event on Saturday night there. Nice opportunity to quaff some brews that never make it to bottles in our fair city. Did anybody attend the Cask Ale event at Breese yesterday?

Didn't go to the Cask Ale event because I had to wait in line at 4 am to get Great Taste tickets.
I did go to the Central Waters tap takeover at Malt House on Friday. All sorts of rare, barrel-aged beers and a large, well-behaved crowd.

I came upon the Two Brothers tap takeover at the Paradise on Saturday night, definitely a pleasant surprise. Their Tangent oak-aged sour paired very well with a Dise burger.

Anybody know where I can try Common Thread on the near east side? Somebody said they liked it but couldn't remember where and it was on the west side anyway. Isthmus says it's "throughout Madison" and I've been checking but I haven't seen it yet.

Checking Untappd, I see Craftsman, Great Dane, Ale Asylum, Hop Haus, Brickhouse BBQ, One Barrel, Mr. Brews, Vintage... All those in the last day or so. I know they're not all near-east side, but it's findable, is what I'm saying.

Dexter's had a nice Sierra Nevada and Ballast Point event today. My only beef with them is they are on the high side on price per ounce. So you have to be OK with paying a premium, which I was. It does limit my visits there because they always do it.

I have been to a few events and they all have been packed. Too packed for me. I think overall it still has momentum and seems a bit more promoted now that Isthmus is running it.

Kind of like a rising tide, many places that don't have a listed event, have some decent, unique taps. I wouldn't mind if they could figure out some way to get a more diverse set of breweries in. A lot of the events seem to feature the same local or national crews. I would defer to inviting/procuring whoever is in the top 10/25/50 on the beer-list websites to make it easy and frankly, damn sexy.

The collaborative seems genuinely well supported executed and received. I think the collaborative echoes and compliments the kitchen community efforts going on at other times of the year.

Yay beer; next year in robot cars.

I read that some fee was raised from $350 to $500 which bothered some enough to not officially participate.

Hope to see you there. The odds are good, only one in six thousand. I will be wearing a green and white striped Three Floyd's soccer jersey. Only one other dude has one and he's nice, so say hello!

I saw your doppelganger, and I did say hello! I was pretty certain it wouldn't be you based on his straw hat (no idea why that seemed un-garg-like), but figured I'd give it a shot. He was nice, as promised. He said he'd seen you about an hour before... but I think we were moving in opposite directions. My crew started at the Real Ale Tent (loved #s 45 & 46) and headed vaguely west from there.

What was your best in show? Mine was a clear winner, nothing else came close: Flat12's cucumber kolsch. Wow. Something new, which put it above other great-but-familiar brews. The triple (not double) rye from Boulevard was another standout. More like a shot than a beer.

And what was with the Dane? They had some REALLY tasty brews! Wouldn't have guessed it based on past experience. (As opposed to what, future experience? That phrasing has always puzzled me.)

Fantastic event, IMO. Weather didn't hurt, for sure. But what a lovely setting! And so many happy people, attending and working.

Nice logo this year, too. Almost made me buy some swag, but instead I decided the glass was enough and queued up for my cab home. Which came really quickly. Well done, Union.

Damn! For the 1st year ever, since 1996, we started at the 600 tent. Never did see you or my fellow 3 Floyd's guy. I will have to check my notes in a less inebriated state!

I really liked Parched Eagle's Gluten Tolerant Wheat Wine. It was my favorite non-IPA of the day.

I tried a good number of sours but I never quite hit on one that I was overly impressed with. Maybe mixing up the styles put me in a bad spot for drinking them.
