Bell's Hopslam 2016

Postby Wino » Mon Jan 25, 2016 6:07 pm

Did everyone quit drinking? No posts since October.

Anyway, this year's Hopslam is here. Seems a few weeks earlier than usual and it's in cans. Plenty in stock at Woodman's East.

The honey seems to hit the palate up front and stronger this year. Then the malt and hops fight to the bitter end.

Also picked up some Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Tropical IPA because Chris Drosner said it tasted like weed. Will make the comparison later tonight.

Maybe I should have posted this in Drunk Posts w/ a side of narcotics.

Been working on my stash of Double Crooked Tree. Thanks for the heads-up.

Did you see any mini-kegs?

I just picked up the Tropical IPA today, so I'll report on it after I try it tomorrow.
I like Hopslam, it just hasn't been as much better than everything else as its price would suggest. Is this year's version noticeably better than others?

Steve's on Uni had them, but they have since been cleared out by the rampaging hordes.

I did not see any mini kegs at Woodman's.

I don't know if I can say this year's Hopslam is better. It's only the 3rd "vintage" I've tried. The honey and malt stand out. I had palate fatigue after two, not to mention a decent buzz. Noticed it is 10% ABV.

Tried in earnest last night to compare something to the Beer Camp Tropical IPA. Started with the something and ended up opting for a big piece of cake afterwards instead of the IPA

Sampling the Tropical IPA now and it definitely has a kushy aroma and a subtle taste of it, too. Some citrus notes, maybe grapefruit. Nice little IPA for $7.99.

I'm trying my first SN Tropical now. I'm not a certified beer taster, but I like this beer. Hoppy, yet well-balanced. My tropical overtone tastes like mango to me. This will not be my last sixer of this elixir.

Sounds like something I'd enjoy. I'll look for it.

Ditto here, and I'm not getting even a remote taste of any cannabis pipe dregs like the WSJ reviewer got in his review in today's paper. Jenny Street Market was sold out of the other Tropical IPAs when I got there:(

I bought a sixer after reading this yesterday since it sounded pretty good, but I gotta say, it tastes like weed.

I went shopping for a comparison "Tropical IPA" at Woodman's in Sun Prairie today and got some Deschutes. The Sierra Nevada is better but neither tastes like weed to me- not even remotely. On the bright side, Woodman's has Hopslam mini-kegs:)

Just tonight, once alerted, yeah, weed taste. Not a bad thing by any means, except for my chagrin at missing it the first time around. I find it pleasant.

I've noticed tropical fruit notes out of this beer upon subsequent tastings. But the warmer it gets in your glass, the cannabis notes appear. Mango kush.

12 pk bottles on sale for $10 at Woodman's. Must be the last of it. Bottled in late December but still tasting fresh. I stocked up.

Looked online but can't find any unambiguous indication of the IBUs for this beer or for the Two-Hearted. How to they compare, apart from price?
