Growlers to Go-Go

Postby Henry Vilas » Fri Oct 02, 2015 7:28 pm

Growlers to get their own space on East Wash

Sounds like a good idea. I've got some old growlers somewhere. Will they have a trade-in value?

I have 4 or 5 of the darn things and haven't used one in quite awhile. Time to dust them off.

It's been approved by the city, looks like it will open March 2016. Congrats, Trixie's.

Has anyone been? I am interested but would need to travel. Decent taps? How much does a avg growler run? Does one usually buy a couple of growlers at a time or is that déclassé?

I've checked the site and called a few times but I never want to have a growler of what they've got on tap.

They will let you taste before you buy. You can also get a pint/snifter of something if you want. There are options for 32 or 64 oz growlers, and it doesn't have to be one of theirs if you happen to have your own. They also have a couple of pinball machines. I recommend checking it out. If you don't see anything you want a growler fill for, Malt House, Dexters, Ale Asylum and Karben4 are right nearby.

Give it a try, it's a cool place. As garg said, you can have a couple of free samples, or sit at the bar and have a pint if you need further arm-twisting. They usually have a solid variety of styles, so you should be able to find something to your liking.

Also, they are celebrating their first anniversary next week, and will be having a couple of special tappings each day. It'd be a good time to check them out.

I've yet to fully understand what a growler gets you that a trusty old six pack doesn't. Can someone explain?

Freshness, and availability. A fair number of of beers aren't distributed in bottles and cans in an area, but they are available at bars and brewpubs. In that case, a growler is a way to be able to take some home with you.

I naively thought that growler fills would be the carry-out equivalent of drinking pitchers in the bar-- cheaper than prepackaged-- so I'm always confused when the tap pricing at Growlers to Go-Go (or anywhere, for that matter) reflects a premium over readily-available bottles or cans. You want me to pay 3 extra dollars for a growler fill (64 oz) than you charge for a sixer (with MORE beer in it- 72oz) only 20 feet away? No thanks.

Clearly others have different freshness concerns, 'cuz those 3 cans in my fridge are gonna stay 'fresh' much longer than a half-consumed growler. I use growlers for rare taps, and that's about it. Needless to say, my beer fridge stock rotates regularly while my growlers sit mostly unused.

The ability to take your beer to the beach or on a boat -- locations where glass is frowned upon or just generally a bad idea -- or camping or a house party or...

It's for serving volume without being limited by what's portioned out into 12oz bottles or cans. People can have as little as they want without opening a whole container.
