Your Favorite Concerts/Shows...

Postby jonnygothispen » Tue Jan 30, 2018 10:35 am

Probably The Butthole Surfers in their prime in 1987 in a small room at the UW Whitewater. Powerful & mesmerizing. I didn't even notice the operation on a penis on the backdrop until my buddy mentioned it after the show.

2) The Meat Puppets at High Noon Saloon in 2007. High energy...

3) A Milwaukee band doing covers of Sweet at Mickey's with wigs & the proper 70s clothes. It was sweeeeeet indeed!

I like the free, local events in the great outdoors.

-V05 at Labor Day fest at the Madison Labor Temple on Park St. Fun party with pro-worker and pro-union crowd.
-Dane Dances. Tony Castenada band and V05 are some of my favorites.
-Concerts on the square.
-Jazz at Five with Cheryl Bentyne from Manhattan Transfer.
-Jazz at Five with Cyrille Aimee.

-Sunspot at Taste of Madison.

-Beth Kille band at Taste of Madison.

Sophie B Hawkins was a taste of Madison one year but I couldn't make. Still mad I missed that one.

I like the free, local events in the great outdoors.

I'm a sucker for any show that makes me weep.

1999. My husband and I went to see Astrud Gilberto at House of Blues in Chicago. I don't know why, but I thought she'd be ancient. Nope. Middle-aged, in flawless Astrud voice and in complete command of her superhot band. The tiniest gesture, barely a twitch of her finger, and they'd go exactly where she wanted. I cried at One Note Samba, it was just so overwhelming.

2000. Friends gave my husband and me concert tickets as a gift, but didn't tell us what or where the concert would be. "Save this date from 3pm till early morning." We piled into their van and drove to Illinois… turns out we were headed to Ravinia, the outdoor festival grounds in Highland Park. The artist: Celia Cruz, ohmyfuckinggodareyoukiddingme. It was a spectacular summer night and she and her band were AMAZING. The whole crowd sang along to Guantanamera, and yeah, I cried. Magical.

2017. My best friend and I caught k.d. lang's Ingénue tour at the Civic Center in 1992. Great show, but not #1. Last summer k.d. did a 25th-anniversary Ingénue Redux tour across Canada, and the Calgary date matched up perfectly with my friend's 50th birthday. So we headed up to the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium. It had to be there — k.d.'s hometown, plus one of her older songs starts "She was a big-boned gal from southern Alberta." We sprang for VIP seats practically close enough to touch her, and she and her band gave an insanely awesome performance. Cried too many times to count at that one.

Three dry-eyed Barrymore runners-up: Tito Puente, They Might Be Giants, & Hugh Masakela. Oh, and pretty much any Free Hot Lunch! show at Club de Wash in the late 80s — no crying, but SO much drinking.

It's a tossup. There's that Tull/Johnny and Edgar Winter/Spooky Tooth concert back in 69, and Geno Delafose at Central Park a few years ago. For some reason hearing "Promised Land" as zydeco was really fun.

I've talked about the Tull concert before. As was pointed out later, concert prices aren't really as outlandishly high as I thought, compared to the cost of every other damn thing these days.

I was fortunate to be able to see Jethro Tull & ELP at the Marcus Ampitheater in Milwaukee in 97 or 98. Awesome show. ELP played balls to the wall, & Ian Anderson was fantastic. We drove all the way down from LaCrosse in a Ford Escort wagon with a bent frame : )

My top concert was Freddie King at the Church Key in the mid 70s. Luther Allison jammed with him during his last set. It was so electric that no one sat for the entire performance.

Other notables, were Cream on their farewell tour in San Diego in the late 60s. Deep Purple opened. Also Bob Marley on his Babylon by Bus tour; Bob Dylan in 76 or 77 and Neil Young a little earlier, all at the Colosseum.

Forgot one: 1983, Huey Lewis and the News at a dive bar just west of Wausau. They already had a couple radio/MTV hits, so it was cool to see them in a little club like that. I was right up against the stage in a packed house. The band played like it was their biggest gig ever. SUPER fun. I think I still have a guitar pick from that show.

Probably no particular order except for #1s

1) King's X and Galactic Cowboys - Summerfest. S/T tour.
1a) Queensryche - Dane County Coliseum - Empire tour.
1b) Every Weird Al show I have attended
2) Yes - Alpine Valley. 90210 Tour
3) Pearl Jam - 10 tour - R&R Station. See note above about Huey Lewis.
4) Urge Overkill - R&R station. Meh crowd, great show.
5) Springsteen - Born in the USA tour - Alpine Valley. Bought tix that day - the album was only out for a few weeks, so no sellout at that point.

Other Notables: Numerous Kansas, Cheap Trick, BOC, and REO concerts. Metallica, Outlaws, Tubes, Romantics 2x, Producers 2x, The Who, Krokus, Judas Priest, Cinderella, Off Broadway, Joan Jett, Ramones, Social Distortion.

Hard to narrow down, but 3 immediately came to mind due to the spirited performances.

Black Flag and Minutemen, Turner Hall, 7/27/85
Terry Callier, Regent Street Retreat, 3/9/00
Sigur Ros, Barrymore, 11/11/02

Duca- we also saw kd lang that night, great show.

I saw Weird Al open for the Turtles around 1981 or 1982. So much fun.

That's right! I forgot about that! Killdozer opened at the UW Whitewater too. I had no idea who they were then. Really glad I got to see them in their prime...
