UW dead in the water

Postby fennel » Wed Jun 18, 2014 10:12 am

Anybody know what's going on? I haven't been able to reach any UW sites for hours.

Servers are down. They sent out a campus text.

Word is a power outage and the automated switchover to UPS started a fire — which by chance started during scheduled fire-related testing, so it took a while to propagate the information that yes, there really is a fire. That's the scuttlebutt, anyway.

Still down. I've never experienced something like this with the UW before. It really sucks that I can't send out emails. Meh, first world problems.

And an eggs-in-one-basket problem.

It's very embarrassing. Yes, it seems to have been due to a number of weird things happening all at once, but that's no excuse for not having your data and services mirrored offsite.

The fact that they don't have a working backup generator is also embarrassing. There are a lot of folks on campus who rely heavily on email, calendering, and the use of campus online services. How the hell were they supposed to get anything done today. WiFi is out in buildings as well. Luckily this is during the summer, but if this were to happen during the school year, that would really cause a clusterfuck.

Hey, just hang in there. Nice PR work. Plus, no updates since this morning.

Sure is. Now someone has to find/compose just the right music to go with it. I can sort of hear it in my head, but that's where my skills end.

The UW tweety thread says that power has finally been restored to the data center. That's a start.

The way I read it, they have back-ups but they had to take them all down to fix the battery on one because they're all on the same circuit.

Really, really stupid system design. And again, services should all be mirrored offsite so when this happens, they switch the DNS and in 0-120 minutes or so all services are running off of the mirrored site until they can restore local systems.

Some services are mirrored off site at another data center - but only those necessary for continued operations in case of "emergency" meaning: police/security (including card access for doors and fire alarms), parts of the hospital, animal care and sensitive research. Same set of stuff that was the first to get chilled water when the cooling system went down a few years back.

A day without email would be a welcome treat for me. At least UW people could spend more time today watching the World Cup on the Union tv's. UW has this to say on FB:

Well, we could except we were still at work. It's not like the system went down and they told us all to go home.
