Vegetarian-friendly food pantries, community meals, etc.

Postby zeropoint » Sat May 24, 2014 9:07 pm

Hello!

I am a vegetarian living downtown (without a car) and my finances have left me unable to afford my own food for a bit. I know there are a number of pantries around and also a number of places that provide free meals, but I am wondering if anyone knows which ones might be the best for vegetarians. Alternately, if you know of other ways to get free veg groceries or meals, please do share. It would be especially awesome if I could find free fresh produce and/or soy milk. (I am veg, not vegan, but I can't drink cow milk.) Thank you for your help.

Can I assume you're on food stamps? If not, do that asap. I know they're accepted at the Sat. and Wed. Farmers Markets. Don't know about the rest.

Ah, yes. I should have mentioned that. I get FoodShare, but only $17/month, so that's gone pretty quickly.

The Goodman Center food pantry is vegetarian-accommodating.

Last year they offered produce as well as preserved food. This year I don't know if it's too early for produce or not, but you could call and ask.

A related tip:
Show your EBT card at the info desk at the Willy Co-op. That will get you a 10% discount on all purchases for a year.
