The independent guys and family business guys are not usually union. Those are the ones who usually bid small residential jobs. I have no problem with your request so don't jump all over me. Just a point of information about business models of self employed tradesmen.

From the IBEW 159 site, residental contractors.

Sorry I don't have a rec but you could look some up on Yelp. Went by Hill Electric on Emil a while ago on way back from drop off site. They seem to be doing very well.

Thanks, b. Yes, I saw the IBEW list, was hoping somebody had some direct experience to share.

I had good luck with Urban Renewals for a major upgrade.

My experiences with Hill Electric have all been great. Courteous, prompt, and some helpful suggestions that saved us money that they would not have had to volunteer.

I am a member of Local 159, and all of our contractors have their niches. If you have a small project for your home, Hill is a good choice. When friends ask me to do side jobs, I decline and refer them to Brian at Prana Electric. He is a one man shop, and I have worked with him in the past and he is very smart.

Hill, Nickles, and Westphal are good either by my own experience or reputation I've heard from others..

Smart business people do things that cost them money in the short run, because it leads to referrals like this that make them more in the long run.

I've used Hill for large and small projects and have been happy with everything they've done. I recommend Butch specifically, though all the guys who have been to my house seem knowledgeable and efficient.

Scott Kiel. http://www.linkedin.com/pub/scott-kiel/66/2a1/792

He's an independent guy who I know. Super friendly and very reasonable. I haven't had to use him, but co-workers did and they thought he was great.
