What is an "activist" - to YOUR best reckoning?

Postby Mad Howler » Wed May 21, 2014 2:24 am

I will tell you what I believe.
I believe it relevant to be satisfied & associated with a process larger than oneself.
Why have we been taught (& continue  to be taught) this notion is 'activism'?
I do not expect anyone to give me anything for stating the obvious.

I can tell you that some have made an expertise of co-opting our good intentions.
Why would that be?
Put your own stake in the ground here...

An activist is someone who actively participates in a political or social cause, usually leftist protests.

Why leftist? I can think of plenty of right leaning (or apolitical) causes who have self identified activists involved.

I think of an activist as someone who actively works to support a cause or goal, be it social, political or other.

Thank you for dispatching the L v. R notion.
This is important in my mind - for whatever that is worth.
I despair over OUR inability to resolve issues most agree upon.
I despair about the cleverly constructed divisions that allow this status to persist.

As an aside, it was hard to believe the hypocrisy of WSJ when the head honchos loudly called out a few of their employees for signing the recall petition as against their policy of "no political activism" given that the paper itself engages in political activism in almost every issue even to the point of endorsing candidates. The one person I know who worked there and signed the petition had his position eliminated. I wonder how the other 5 fared? I think it was 6 total who signed.

an activist is a politics hacker -- someone who wants to improve things and is not satisified with what is being fed to the masses by the grey forces of mediocrity, so they get up and do something. not all have a clue, not all are benevolent, but most are, and it is good for the soul.

Yes & indeed.
Take a close look and listen to this effort: https://mayday.us/

Contribute is you can - if you cannot or do not want to -
Please share this effort forward as, I believe, no matter how you straddle our duopoly this experiment is teaching many to respect the "people" in "by the people".
This experiment seems to be reminding the crowd of us that it is about us and the expectation that we remember how to care for US in ever more perfect ways. This could be refreshing.
