The new Hussy/Digital Leather record got some love over at Pitchfork yesterday:
"Starting things off is Digital Leather, the formidable project by multi-instrumentalist Shawn Foree. On the other, it's Madison darlings the Hussy. And hey, why not, Foree also plays on some of the Hussy's side. While Foree smolders with his space-aged new wave tracks (which are a must-have if you're a fan of that Damaged Bug LP or, duh, any previous Digital Leather work), the Hussy's power pop attack is given an added layer of synth-based spaciness. This is what a split should be: Two sides that are inherently different while wholly complementing each other."

Previous Impose Hype for the split:
"The Hussy’s newest track, “Round & Down,” conjures an image of that slightly beaten-up, cloud grey 1992 Volvo 740 Turbo sedan (boxy, but reliable!) at the back of the high school parking lot, smoke seeping out of the cracks at the tops of the windows and a fragrant eau de weed dispersing through the parking lot. Luckily, the archetypal badasses in the car (long greasy hair, ripped blue jeans, black Ramones tees) are at the back of the lot and safe from the maniacal principal/teacher, who's essentially an amalgam of Principal Rooney from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Mr. Hand from Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Loud music is emanating from the Volvo, of course, and it’s now hard to imagine that music being anything other than the upbeat psych-punk of The Hussy song we’re premiering here.

“Round & Down” is an extension of the fun breed of psych rock the Madison, Wisconsin-based group have been producing for the past few years. The track opens with a chordless descending guitar riff, cueing in drums and bass and turning up the energetic revelry of the song. In the back of the mix, textural synths creep in and fill out the sonic space as the vocals chant, “Round and round and round and round and round.” Despite the circular nature of the lyrics, the music itself is anything but; the half-time chaos of the last thirty seconds serves as a fitting climax to a song that continues to progress across its two-minute running time, which is just enough for that pre-homeroom smoke sesh."

Digital Leather's leadoff track from the split 12"

Digital Leather, solo project of synth manipulator Shawn Foree, has all the staples of modern-day lonesomeness—deep, deliberately lounge-inflected vocals, a solo high beat that never seems to change, and a head-bopping melody that is neither too sad or too happy. This last element makes the track "Lately" one for the books in terms of self-reflecting sorrow: as Foree sings along that there are "so many reasons to run from romance lately," a crisp synth plays along with his vocals, sometimes in pure contrast and other times in tandem. The result is a track infused with that kind of longing that is hard to grasp, the kind that we find ourselves repeating without even knowing it is happening.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if there was a show on a Friday The 13th with a Full Moon so all the weirdos can howl and hoot all they want??? Well about 4 months ago I checked the calendar and this show happens to fall with those exact specifics.

DO NOT MISS ALL THE VAMPIRES, WEREWOLVES, AND "NORMAL PEOPLE" DOING WEIRD SHIT.

THIS SHOW WILL BE THE PARTY TO START THE SUMMER. GET DOWN. BOOGIE. ALL NIGHT.

There won't be a full moon on friday the 13th for another 35 years after this one!

Also Arts Extract posted this nice little blurb today:
The Hussy, The Blind Shake, Trin Tran, Disembodied Monks. High Noon Saloon, 10 p.m.

At this show, Madison duo The Hussy celebrate the release of a new split LP with Omaha synth-punks Digital Leather (look for a track from that on our site Thursday), and just as importantly, Minneapolis’ The Blind Shake visit for one of their short but undeniably fierce sets of wiry post-punk. Read more in our interview with Blind Shake member Mike Blaha.

http://artsextract.com/2014/06/12/track ... ssy-happy/

“The Hussy has another record out” is the kind of bombshell you work your way up to, say, somewhere between “puppies are cute” and “a triangle is a shape.” Between the Madison duo’s three full-lengths are a steady stream of 7-inches, 10-inches, and tapes scattered across a dozen or so labels. That said, a new split 12″ with Omaha’s Digital Leather, which they’ll celebrate with a Friday show at the High Noon Saloon, definitely stands out in guitarist Bobby and drummer Heather Hussy’s rapidly amassed garage-punk-psych discography. The Hussy’s side comprises seven new songs that often pay homage to Digital Leather’s dense, fuzzy synth-punk melodies, and in fact DL leader Shawn Foree plays keyboards on several of the tracks. The first Hussy song on the record is affectionately titled “WWDLD?” Also, last month, Bobby Hussy and Foree recorded a batch of songs for yet a more properly collaborative record.

But my favorite of the new Hussy tracks is “Happy,” which shows how drummer Heather’s vocals are becoming an ever more prominent, and more melodic, part of The Hussy’s music. While the band has always been a partnership, Heather says she started writing a lot more while The Hussy were making their second album, 2012′s ‘Weed Seizure.’

“I think I just got more guts to be able to sing,” Heather says. “We write more now on our own, whereas when we first started we would jam a lot more.”

Like Bobby, Heather had Digital Leather on the mind while writing for the split. “I listened to a bunch of Digital Leather records, then wrote that,” she says. “I wanted to kind of sound like them, or my version of them.”

The result on “Happy” is a distinctly Digital Leather keyboard sound—rich and warm but a little off and roughed-up—and one of the strongest, catchiest vocal performances Heather’s put out yet. There’s another good example of that on “EZ/PZ,” from a forthcoming 7-inch."
