Is there a place for grits and potato pancakes?

Where are you eating and what do you think? What's opening, closing, succeeding, failing?

Is there a place for grits and potato pancakes?

Postby Beaver » Thu Mar 27, 2014 7:57 pm

I like grits and potato pancakes. The only place for potato pancakes I know of is the Original Pancake house in Middleton which is always too crowded. Anywhere else?

Can you get good grits anywhere in this one horse town? Everyone serves oatmeal, which is good, but where are my hot steamy grits?!

It never occurred to me that this was a horse town.

I think you're about 500 miles too far north to be expecting grits in a restaurant. I'd love to get them here in California too, but I no more expect them here than I expected to find good sourdough bread in Madison. Even when there was a sourdough bread company there.

Smoked Gouda grits at Crema are pretty great.

The best place for potato pancakes is to find a small German Lutheran church, (probably in Northern or Eastern Wisconsin) that is having a Potato Pancake dinner. You will probably be able to get all the potato pancakes you can eat, with applesauce, sausage links, and a piece of pie for dessert, for about 8 bucks or so. The apple pie will probably come with an optional slice of cheddar cheese.

It's not, which may be a clue as to why it's hard to find grits.

Crema's grits are the best I've ever had.

Beaver, I lived in the deep South for a while and after living there you can never eat grits again. There is nothing up here that compares. I feel the same way about biscuits and gravy.

The Crema grits do intrigue me.

I love potato pancakes. The Big 10 Pub has them on their fish fry menu online. Last time I was there, they weren't offered. Jac's on Monroe also has them for Friday Fish Fry. I find them too crowded for dinner so I haven't tried them. Plaka has them for breakfast, but I didn't care for them. The ones at Stalzy's Deli were OK, but I like the frozen ones from Trader Joe's better. My favorite recent potato pancakes were the ones at the Turner Hall (Milwaukee) Fish Fry. I grew up in the Milwaukee area where most fish fries have potato pancakes. I was so disappointed when I found out Madison just had fries.

Veranda has a soft polenta for brunch that is amazing and close to grits.

Thanks for the tips. Crema doesn't have grits or potato pancakes on their weekend brunch menu. Maybe they used to but don't now? But they have good sounding items like Blueberry Oat Pancakes:

Maybe I will try some of the other places Marge mentioned for potato pancakes. Sounds like Melly Mel's is the only place for grits. I can try them if I'm ever near there on a weekend morning but I will probably just buy frozen ones and fix my own like Marge mentioned.

Per the chef/owner, grits are still on at Crema. Website is inaccurate in that regard.

Super Grits: with Jordandal bacon and a fried egg on top. A meal in itself.
