WGN News at Nine

How can cultural elitists like ourselves put TV in the Culture category? Well, where the hell else is it going to fit?

WGN News at Nine

Postby Shorty » Sat Mar 15, 2014 9:18 pm

In Feb WGN America stop showing News at Nine on cable TV outside the Chicago area. This was my favorite news show to watch. Many viewers across the USA are mad about it. If you don't like it, like this FB page:

Or go the WGN FB and tell them to bring it back:

Just another step in the ugly corporatization of a once-great media outlet.

You could watch the online if you miss them so much.

Damn! They're closing the Des Plaines Oasis! God I'm gettin' old, I've been though there a gazzillion times and I have fond memories of breakfast at Harvy's and HoJo's!

But I don't want to sit and watch the news on my PC. I prefer watching my TV from the comfort of my couch, where I can use the remote to switch channels or change volume when ad's or news come on I don't want to see.

aaargh! i tuned in last night looking for election coverage.
on charter cable it also seemed that c-span ii disappeared right before the last canadian election as well, but it has re-appeared.

my thoughts exactly -- if i want to watch the news on the computer i'll bring up zdf or örf . . .

before they changed everything with the signals and shit one could pull in the audio from milwaukee, chicago, and rockford channels with a purpose-built tv-audio or a vhf radio in addition to madison ones too, especially at night.

i know the 9 o'clock news was popular around here because about 15 years ago fast eddie vrdolyak had higher name recognition in dane county than 4/7 of the madison school board. in the past, the other wgn newscasts were all on there too plus a national independent broadcast that i think they had a hand in putting together.

I knew a kid that lived next door to Bozo. He was able to get on the Grand Prize game. Stupid arrows were rigged. I think there was something like a 10 year waiting list to get on the show. Pre-internet urban-legend perhaps. TV Pow rocked.

Me, on Chicago's BOZO'S CIRCUS in 1976 playing the Grand Prize Game :

One problem with this is that they are prevented for some reason from showing the sports video - some rights agreement. So, if one watched the WGN news at least in part to get the Chicago sports team news (and that was a big reason I watched), the online version isn't the complete answer.

I am very disappointed in the WGN decision to do this. There's some reading on it if you google it, and it is corporate baloney and what to a dumb guy like me seems like a ridiculous reading of the ratings and "how to make your station successful" (like, running "Funniest Videos of All Time" and "Rules of Engagement" back to back to back to back all night all the time is a good thing).

I had a similar feeling when the Chicago Tribune stopped selling the daily paper here in Madison. Here's a chance to be the "great regional newspaper", and instead electing to be just another local website. Oh well, I suspect that is the way of the world and old luddites like me who like to hold the newsprint in their hands just have to suck it up.

Speaking of the Trib, I have an original article (1972) with cartoons, that I pasted onto a board and colored. I paid $3.99, for an extremely poor, blotchy copy. I framed my original.
