Signs of Spring

Postby Madsci » Wed Mar 12, 2014 5:51 pm

Some signs of spring are appearing.
Little creeks forming from the snow melt.
The house has been heated by our passive solar system for a few days in a row.
Our chickens are back to full egg production.
And the doe goats actually look pregnant not just fat.

A robin landed on my patio this morning.

My income tax refund has been spent, but wisely.

I heard the first loud car stereo booming since Thanksgiving.
I heard tires squeal for the first time since Thanksgiving.
I see people driving faster and more wildly.
I can see people's faces outside without scarfs.
I see people out in neighborhoods walking, jogging, and biking.
Some joggers are in short sleeves and shorts.
High school basketball tourneys at the Kohl center.
College students are talking about Spring Break plans.
Baseball games are on TV.
Days are almost 12 hrs long.
I hear birds chirping in my yard when I get up in the morning.
I can see grass in the yards.
I don't hear snow blowers and snow plows at night.
I can't see my breath outside.
I can no longer go ice skating or cross country skiing.

Lots of dog shit out there. Slowly emerging from their icy graves like little victims of an arctic Vesuvius.

Yep,
That and the other black sludge that resolves from snow banks.
Spring has slowly sprung.
This too shall pass.

Forgive me if I'm repeating this: A friend wanted to get even for his neighbor letting his dog shit all over friend's yard. So he saved all the turds and lined them up on neighbor's gas grill, like little sausages. We like to think neighbor lit up the gas before he tried to barbecue! Neighbor learned to curb his dog.

Our spring comes about the same time as our neighbor Minnesota, so this applies. Found it while googling something else.

Spring Poem

Back where I come from, it snows in April,
It's not what you wanted, but it's what you got
You don't shovel your walk but you wish that your neighbor'll
Cause it's not just a little snow, it is a whole lot.

We don't complain, because what can you say?
We put on a warm coat and just march forth.
Even in an April snow, we are okay.
We were brought up to be okay here in the North.

If it snows in April, we just say, "Mercy."
If it snows in May, we say, "For pity's sake."
God knows there is something a whole lot worse He
Could do. Anything short of that, we can take.

Minnesota is Minnesota, California it ain't.
We can have a good time just looking at paint
And when the crocuses come and tulips, and purple
gentian,
We feel joyful, though it's nothing we would mention.

I heard, then saw, a crane flying over Dunn's Marsh yesterday.

That's a good sign of spring.

Any skunk cabbages coming up by that boardwalk in Wingra Woods yet?

Once the snow is all gone, woodcocks peenting at dusk in Curtis Prairie.

Elsewhere in Wisconsin, a good sign of spring is taps on maple trees and long lines of plastic tubing running hither and yon through the woods.

The first snowdrops are peeking through in the backyard. At least the rabbits won't eat them (like they do with our crocuses).

I saw an ant. Moving. How is that even possible?
