Kaleem Caire running for mayor?

Postby Stu Levitan » Mon Mar 03, 2014 10:58 am

Unexpectedly resigns as CEO of Urban League of Greater Madison. To focus on "new opportunities, his family and finishing his master's degree."

Would that be mayor of Fitchburg where he lives?

If he will back the city out of the Judge Doyle Square fiasco as currently proposed, I'd vote for him.

Soglin, meet your Edgewater debacle.

Caire emphatically denied a mayoral run just two weeks ago.

If he runs, he runs. I just don't want to hear any talk about how folks who oppose him are racists...only in Madison;)

Caire has been a long time advocate for closing the racial disparity in education. That is a noble cause and although I don't always agree with his approach (such as taxpayer funded single sex charter schools without public oversight), I too would like to see better educational outcomes for children of color. But running for mayor of Madison would not directly address that problem. He passed up an opportunity to run for the MMSD school board. I doubt if he has the necessary background to run a medium size city such as Madison.

I still don't think Paul Soglin is going to run again, but will give every indication of a re-election campaign until the last moment. Caire is not going to run, either.

Resnick seems to be the name that's coming up a lot.

I think the brakes are slowly being put on Doyle Square with a full stop in the future. Soglin knows it would be his white whale.

I hope you are right. In each of his previous terms (or periods of time) in office, Soglin left the city with visible downtown changes fostered by the mayor's office. He likes to leave a mark.

It's to his credit that he's at least open to the possibility the third term might be different. Soglin is not mindlessly stubborn, whatever else you might say about him. And he's got a good grasp of finance.

I think the revelation this hotel was being pushed quietly by forces from Epic was a big nail in the coffin. We all welcome the Epic workers downtown -- they bring plenty of money and are a great asset -- but asking the city to build an entire new big hotel to accommodate Epic's guests is way out of line in a business sense. Other hotel operators are trying hard to push back, with the result that cracks in the master plan are starting to show.

He would also need to move to Madison since he lives in Fitchburg.

"If Caire did choose to run for mayor, he would have to quickly find a new home. He currently lives with his wife and five children in Fitchburg."

I'm glad I'm not a newsworthy person (and so, probably, are you).

If you get a nervous twitch, the bored class starts speculating.

The city still needs to replace the ramp at Pinckney and Doty, the MMB still needs renovations and the area behind it is still ripe for development. The city just needs to find the right solution to do all those things. Whether that means building a hotel or a year-round petting zoo remains to be seen.

As for myself, I would like to see a miniature golf course at the vacant lot at Union Corners.

Only if combined with an off-leash dog park, just to make the games more interesting.

The real reson why Caire resigned as head of the Urban League:
Kaleem Caire's departure followed concerns about credit card use
