What is up with this?

Postby you must be joking » Wed Feb 12, 2014 11:19 pm

Okay so like I've just gotta ask: What is up with this crap about more and more people running red lights? This is something I'm seeing more and more in Madison. Not just red lights, but way red lights. I just wonder about those of you who run red lights: What, do you think that your that important that you can't be troubled to wait at a red light? Downtown is really bad. I've come to expect people running a red so I don't even bother to start across an intersection, even when I have the green light, until I know everyone coming in the opposite direction will stop.

Here I thought Madison was not that Bourgeois. Guess I was wrong.

That is, in fact, the way you should have been acting all along. Even if you have a green light, you do not have the right to enter the intersection until the cross-traffic has cleared.

The best advice I've ever read was: Drive as if everyone else is drunk! I've driven in Madison and the Chicago area. When I realized that I couldn't be sure of the other guy, I decided to wait a split second to make sure he was really going to stop!

I notice a lot more people driving at night with no headlights. Maybe it's just a winter thing because of the snow making everything seem brighter, but I bet I've seen a dozen the last 2 months.

Local politics are surely to blame.

That's what I've always thought when I've read your posts.

Every time I read one, I think "This guy sure has some odd notions on politics and people but obviously he's pretty certain that Madison is proletariat."

Now even that is taken from me. Thanks Obama!

People drive with no headlights for the same reason people wear sunglasses at night.

It isn't always the reason, but lately I've noticed that most of the really blatant red-light-runners are on their cell phone. They are also usually the ones that realize at the very last instant that they need to be two lanes over from where they are.

They're also the ones making a turn, into the path of a pedestrian, while yakking on their cell!

As someone who has been a pretty active pedestrian in the downtown area the last 18 years, I haven't really seen it get any worse. Maybe it's other places.

The one thing I feel that has gotten worse are cars making a right and not seeing or yielding to pedestrians.

The best solution to this is a big car with lots of armor.

This.

Last fall I watched a burly guy in a Ford F-250 turn left, honk his horn and plow right through a line of pedestrians who had the walk light at the Monroe/Regent intersection. He looked so angry that those idiots couldn't figure out he had the green light.

And I don't think cars realize that if there is a don't walk sign and it's a green light, pedestrians still have the right of way.
