Pete Seeger, RIP

Postby DCB » Tue Jan 28, 2014 10:26 am

He was, and still is, a national treasure.

CHAIRMAN WALTER: Did you practice your profession?

MR. SEEGER: I sang for people, yes, before World War II, and I also did as early as 1925.

MR. TAVENNER: And upon your return from the service in December of 1945, you continued in your profession?

MR. SEEGER: I continued singing, and I expect I always will.

Yes, he always will.

MR. SEEGER: I feel these questions are improper, sir, and I feel they are immoral to ask any American this kind of question.

MR. TAVENNER: Have you finished your answer?

MR. SEEGER: Yes, sir.

MR. TAVENNER: I desire to offer the document in evidence and ask that it be marked "Seeger exhibit No.4," for identification only, and to be made a part of the Committee files.

MR. SEEGER: I am sorry you are not interested in the song. It is a good song.

"When we're done with that dirty commie the only job he'll be able to get is singing to grade school kids."

"Actually that's exactly what he's doing."

"Great. Make sure it stays that way. He can't do anything subversive with that job."

When I heard him singing on NPR this morning, I knew it was a bad, bad sign.

This one hurts.

I'm glad he lived to be such a grand old man! I'm trying to remember if I saw him at "the barn" in the late 60's or early 70's. One of my favorites of his is "God Bless the Grass that grows through the cracks"!

He rowed his boat ashore.

Wouldn't it be great if everybody had a guitar?

Sometimes it seems to me that Pete Seeger was always already at a better place. I'll miss him being here to remind me of it.

Pete Seeger was one of the very few "celebs" - really more like an average guy than the vast majority - I ever got to meet, before a concert at the UW Stock Pavilion. That was in 1975, if you can believe it. Irreplaceable. Here's my personal favorite:

Great article on Seeger, his family and political roots.

"Seeger had composed one other such number. Written with Weavers bandmate Lee Hayes and first performed at a 1952 benefit for communists in legal trouble, “If I Had a Hammer” was an extraordinary anthem. It pulled off, with great aplomb, the old Popular Front goal of linking the American revolutionary past with the communist revolutionary future, joining the Liberty Bell with the hammer and sickle, and extolling freedom and justice while implying that these quintessentially American qualities were the very virtues that American society lacked"

No, actually, it's a piece of crap--which is why I'm not surprised you posted it.

When Obama acknowledges Seegar's passing, Ned will label the president a fellow traveler.

(from Wikipedia): "City Journal is a quarterly magazine published by the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research, a conservative think tank based in New York City."

Yep, that's the fair-and-balanced Flanders we all know and painfully roll our eyes at.

You are a deeply disturbed sack of shit. You are an inconsequential carbuncle on the ass of humanity who has never accomplished anything of grace or beauty or truth, and you're jealous of those who have. You see the world-wide outpouring of respect and love for Pete Seeger, and your only response is to mock and deride. It must be so painful for you to go through your miserable life, knowing that few, if any, will mourn its end. Please get help.

Was there something factually inaccurate in the piece I posted? I found it extremely interesting and not necessarily disrespectful.
