U.S. No Longer In Top Ten For Economic Freedom

Postby Sandi » Wed Jan 15, 2014 8:01 pm

Thanks to Obama, Democrats and Republicans in congress, the US now ranks 12th in world economic freedom. This while 43 countries achieve their highest ranking ever.

Heritage Foundation and the Wall Street Journal releases their annual rank of the worlds nations.

For 20 years, the index has measured a nation's commitment to free enterprise on a scale of 0 to 100 by evaluating 10 categories, including fiscal soundness, government size and property rights. These commitments have powerful effects: Countries achieving higher levels of economic freedom consistently and measurably outperform others in economic growth, long-term prosperity and social progress. Botswana, for example, has made gains through low tax rates and political stability.

...

It's not hard to see why the U.S. is losing ground. Even marginal tax rates exceeding 43% cannot finance runaway government spending, which has caused the national debt to skyrocket. The Obama administration continues to shackle entire sectors of the economy with regulation, including health care, finance and energy. The intervention impedes both personal freedom and national prosperity.

But as the U.S. economy languishes, many countries are leaping ahead, thanks to policies that enhance economic freedom—the same ones that made the U.S. economy the most powerful in the world. Governments in 114 countries have taken steps in the past year to increase the economic freedom of their citizens. Forty-three countries, from every part of the world, have now reached their highest economic freedom ranking in the index's history.

But consider the source. Oh, don't worry. I'm sure they didn't have time to factor in the Freedom Industries chemical leak in West Virginia. That'll put us over the top for sure.

Nobody pays top marginal tax rates of 43%.
99% of the country will never come close to that bracket.
The top 1% hire accountants.

But by all means let us aspire to the greatness of Botswana.

if we're really lucky, this will signal the beginning a mass exodus of our "job creators" to Botswana.

With them out of the way we'll be able to address our unemployment problems honestly.

I see the Heritage Foundation didn't rate Somalia. If they did, we would dropped to #13.

For instance, heavy-handed government intervention in Brazil's economy continues to limit mobility and fuel a sense of injustice.

So there you have it. Of course, the author provides no statistics to support these claims. He just makes them and, poof, they are true. I also have no clue what he means by "limit mobility" Oh, and you want to talk about injustice, just look how the average worker gets shit on by corporations and CEO's.

Keep in mind, Sandi, this was in the opinion section. Basically, this article means jack shit.

Being that most of you are far left progressives, I am not surprised that you don't care—no are happy—that your country is losing economic freedom.

Sandi, what do you think about Canada being ahead of the U.S.? They have socialized medicine with a single payer system. Maybe that gives its citizens more economic freedom.

Cut the overdramatic horseshit.
The Heritage Foundation is a super-conservative think tank. Their opinions (and that's all they are) are pretty much worthless. These are the same fools who heavily promoted SDI and have backed notable wingnuts like Pat Robertson. If you have some facts you want to discuss, let's see'em. But seriously, the Heritage Foundation can go fuck itself.

Let's be honest, "economic freedom" means freedom to exploit: anyone, anything, anywhere.
