Do You Give Yourself A Christmas Present?

Postby Bwis53 » Sat Dec 21, 2013 1:03 pm

I've been doing this for a long time. This year I got myself a pretty garden magazine and a nice bottle of Beaujolais. Anyone else do this?

It's definitely true that when I'm on Amazon buying Christmas gifts, I get into a shopping zone and am more likely to buy stuff for myself. This year I limited myself to a 16 gigabyte SD card for a project I'm working on.

So you got a tiny item that stores a great deal of value. It's almost like you bought yourself a diamond ring. Congratulations?

It's an appealing thought, but nah. It would be a little weird being the only one to get a gift.

My wife and I don't exchange gifts. Instead, we gift ourselves with a week in the tropics each February (which we pay for around Xmas). Been doing it for 25 years now, which is cumulatively like getting an extra half-year of summer.

Things get pretty wild around here sometimes.

I just bought a spare snow shovel. Not sure if that's what you had in mind, though.

I always get some new Winter clothes and electronics for myself.

Ms Vilas and I have done something similar. When I still taught, we would travel to warm climates during my winter break. Now that we are both retired, we travel when we want. Next up, Great Britian and Ireland in May.

Oh, I just bought myself some more floss...but no! (I'll be sharing the wine and using the best of the garden magazine for a collage over my windowless kitchen sink.) I mean something that delights you like a good meal, book or art supplies.

Nah. I don't get much delight from more stuff, or consumables. I'm probably a drag on the entire economy but I'm a very poor consumer. And spending money on expensive food always seems weird to me, because in like 15 minutes it's gone.

I'm happy this way, so the economy will have to go somewhere else for its kicks.

This is my favorite time of year because I like all the darkness. Really.

It's still there Sno. You just can't see it for awhile.
