Favorite Christmas Music

Postby Huckleby » Thu Dec 19, 2013 7:19 pm

I don't expect much response from the "Happy Holidays", warring-on-Christmas hipsters who inhabit these pages. Probably even some Jews around here.

But I will venture some ideas on some really good albums to try. I mostly make collections of songs I like, but here's a few good albums that hold up. I rarely like any entire Xmas album.

I'd be interested in recs for choral music, or more classical stuff, since I haven't dipped my toe in those waters.

Swingle Singers
This is an album made by German jazz vocal group a long time ago. It's just wonderful.

James Taylor's whole Christmas album holds up:

(I made a nice collection of favorite songs form Shawn Colvin, James Taylor, Sarah McGlaughlin)

Robin Gibb made a slightly odd album, you'll love it or hate it:

I really recommend any collection of Mahalia Jackson. Even if you are indifferent to the Baby Jesus, the intensity, passion, love will bowl you over.

If you like piano jazz you have lots of choices, most of them good, but I put albums by Eddie Harris at top of list.

So much gorgeous guitar music out there.

Slade's "Merry Christmas Everybody."

I don't know if Fairytale of New York is my favorite but I listen to it every year.

And Michael Buble's christmas album but my sister likes it more.

The Alligator Records Christmas Collection is my favorite Christmas album; Chicago blues can make anything fun.

I also enjoy The Reindeer Room, a three volume (last I looked) set of downtempo and chill Christmas stuff.

Finally, DJ Riko's free Merry Mixmas downloads are usually pretty interesting.

That's enough for me.

Roy Wood and Wizzard's version of "I Wish it Could be Christmas Everyday" has been a favorite here since the kiddies were little (so approximately since it came out in the '70s).

Other favorites include the various versions of "Run Rudolph Run" (aka "Run, Run, Rudolph"), with Keith Richard's version (on a .45 with Keith's version of "The Harder They Come" on the flip side) and the Lemmie/Billy Gibbons/Dave Grohl version constituting particular guilty pleasures.

NRBQ, "Christmas Wish"

Unfortunately youtube doesn't seem to have the original, but here's a somewhat treacly cover by She and Him: http://youtu.be/IZnyKP2B3Zw.

The original has some of the rockinest sleighbells this side of The Replacements' "Kiss Me on the Bus." M sez check it out.

Also, Richard & Linda Thompson's "The Sun Never Shines on the Poor" (it's on Hokey Pokey):

...the urchins are writhing around in the street
Like eels playing tag in a barrel
The old Sally Army band sounds mournful and sweet
As they play an old Christmasy carol...

I'm amazed nobody has listed AC/DC's "Mistress For Christmas."

Having been a recipient of the better part of a decade's worth of double-disc Christmas mixes from Prof. Wagstaff, I'm suprised he hasn't been here yet to drop a dozen gems on us yet.

Also, locally, Digibot's "Santa Comes Once a Year" is a masterpiece.

I got that She & Him xmas album last year because the samples sounded cool. Zooey Deschannel can't carry a tune, that's karaoke singing. I know lots of people love that album, but I give it a "nice try".

Thought about posting several times, but it's awfully daunting given that I've included 675 songs on the 12 volumes of my annual mix. I finally decided to give it a go after your prompting and dutifully listed about 3 dozen songs w/Youtube links and 20 or so great albums. When I went to preview it, the site had logged me out and the whole thing was lost. So fuck it. Merry Christmas.
