Rep. Radel (R-Florida) arrested

Postby kurt_w » Wed Nov 20, 2013 12:55 pm

Freshman GOP congressman Trey Radel was arrested for attempting to purchase cocaine.

First reaction:

Radel's a typical GOP filthy hypocrite. He supported an attempt to force poor people receiving SNAP (food stamps) to undergo frequent drug testing.

Second reaction:

Actually, as Repubs go, Radel's not so hawkish on drug issues. He co-sponsored a bill that attempted to remove mandatory minimum sentencing for drug crimes, and has been publicly critical of the drug war.

Third reaction:

If Rep. Radel had been arrested in his home state of Florida, instead of in Washington DC, he would be a felon and would have permanently lost his right to vote.

He is also on record saying his favorite place to vacation is Columbia.

To keep up my persnickety obnoxiousness, technically he works in Columbia and vacations in Colombia.

I thought I might have gotten that wrong. Now I know for sure.

A spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner said in a prepared statement this week that members of Congress "should be held to the highest standards, and the alleged crime will be handled by the courts."
"Beyond that, this is between Rep. Radel, his family, and his constituents," Boehner's spokesman said.

so he's not stepping down I guess

The 'war on drugs' has never been anything but a tool of oppression against the poor and minorities, or an excuse for the militarization of the police.

Its a pretty good bet Rep. Radel won't be seeing any jail time for his crimes. Certainly not life without parole. He probably won't end up dying in jail.

One year on paper.
Florida Republican Rep. Henry "Trey" Radel pleaded guilty Wednesday to a misdemeanor charge of cocaine possession and was sentenced to a year's probation
