Proposed change to Wisconsin SC

Postby FJD » Tue Oct 29, 2013 3:51 pm

let court select chief justice

The current proposal calls for a vote, but I'm not sure why something more gladiatorial couldn't be used.

"It not only minimizes the politics but it introduces more collaboration and cohesion," Hutton said of his proposal.

ummm, yeah. Hutton also makes it clear that this isn't an attack on the current Chief Justice.

Besides ceremonial duties, the chief justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court also serves as the administrative head of the state courts system and submits the budget for that system to the Legislature.

The chief justice may exercise some other influence over the handling of cases through the position, but in general has no more power than the other six justices over whether the court takes up a case or over how it is decided.

Sounds like the chief justice really doesn't have any special powers, so who cares? Not worth the attention a constitutional amendment would require.

Why bother with all this? Let's just have Wisconsin Manufacturer's and Commerce pick the chief justice. They've done a great job of buying most of the other justices.
