The city does not allow signs to be directly painted on a building. And the area of the sign, combined with existing signage on the structure, likely exceeded the total permitted signage area on the facade, Hank said.

Well, that'll explain why Stalzy's Deli painted over its logo on the east-facing wall.

The city hasn't removed anything. They've ordered it removed, unless or until the owner gets a permit.

This is great...

Ald. David Ahrens, 15th District, sent a complaint to Building Inspection after learning about the sign from a constituent who thought it was inappropriate and “did not want to have to explain to my daughter what that woman was doing,” according to a city press release.

"Please, government, don't make me have to parent my own child."

$100 says she's also a member of the party of "personal responsibility."

EXCELLENT! I do hope that officers of the city will move to stamp-out all other exhibitions of excessive expression. God is great!

There are plenty of ordinances that are enforced only if there's a complaint. It doesn't inspire faith in good government.

Oh well, that's completely different. Get a permit.

Wow, I don't necessarily want to go back to the filth and chaos of the 1970's Madison. Dog shit everywhere, the Willy street slum, etc. But we've gone over-board with the sanitized, bourgeois sensibilities.

I could give a shit if the sign stays, but to be fair in regards to NO takeout:

The drawing is considered an advertising sign rather than an artistic expression because it directly promotes the business, he said.

I don't see food anywhere on their mural. I know, it's splitting hairs.

I always thought the Lombardino's mural was a public menace, but I think that has been torn down.

How hard is it to say, "That's a stripper, honey. She takes her clothes off for money--and no, you can't do that, so don't even think of trying it."

Well, it does have the business name and phone number. I think that qualifies it as "advertising" (promoting the business) and not just "artistic expression".

Then there was the time my daughter followed me through the bookstore
Reading ‘Howl’ to me in a loud clear voice
While all the nice ladies in the store smiled indulgently at her
She was probably about nine
And all I could think about
Was how to get her to stop before she came to the ‘saintly motorcyclists’
Because I didn’t want to have to explain the meaning of ‘fucked’
In the middle of the store in front of all the nice ladies
And I knew perfectly well she would ask
Having already had to explain ‘virgin’ in a movie theatre
(Geez, didn’t I teach you to be quiet at the movies?)
And ‘condom’ in a drug store
(Is there some law that you have to wait until we get to the checkout before you ask me anything?)
But she lost interest shortly before she got to that point, barely
And luckily for me did not ask me to define pederasty
And she already knew the word genitals
It was years before it occurred to me that we had, after all
Been in a bookstore, and the shoppers might not, in fact
Have found anything offensive in the question
Nor in my definition
(Can you please wait until we get to the car?)

sorry about that- parenting....

After considering this further, I don't think it had to do with parenting at all. I think the problem is the woman didn't like the signage, but she knew she couldn't sell that, so she invoked "do it for the children."
