I wonder what better causes, the minds described, could better attend to -

Probably not ones that would reward them as well, at least not financially.

I'd also add that creating that kind of network requires a very specific skill set that doesn't necessarily translate to other fields.

My two cents: minds like that exist in large numbers these days, and all of them are trying to do things in every field.

I don't think there are any more geeks creating high speed market transaction applications than there are creating the next new content management system, another hybrid programming language, or a java/mysql-driven fantasy role playing character generator.

This particular endeavor, and it's results, just gets more publicity. It's not clear to me from the article whether the programmers themselves are really getting rich.

True, probably no more enriched than pharaohs closest worker bees.

Still, I think this practice is the epitome of slimy extractive behaviour. Sure this has been going on forever, but don't ya think some push back is in order (as it always has been)?
