RIP Jimmy Gandolfini

Postby Ned Flanders » Wed Jun 19, 2013 10:46 pm

BREAKING… Refresh for latest: Actor James Gandolfini died suddenly after a suspected heart attack while on holiday in Rome to attend the Taormina Film Festival in Sicily. He was 51. Gandolfini will be forever known for his portrayal of mob boss Tony Soprano on the seminal HBO series The Sopranos, which eventually won him 3 Emmy Awards and a $1,000,000-an-episode paycheck.

I can't remember the last time I gasped out loud at the death of a public figure. Wow. Perhaps it's because just last week I was trolling the internet for any latter-day followup to the whole "is Tony Soprano dead?" thing. Regardless of what information I found last week, the answer is definite now.

RIP, Mr. G.

That said, the "greatest actor of his generation" accolades are starting to roll in. Really? Really?! His portrayal of Tony Soprano certainly created one of the greatest characters of all time, and he is to be lauded for that. The rest of his career, at least that which I've viewed, seems to show little range of characters and little range within those characters.

Am I off base? What am I missing?

A very good actor. Certainly not great. And I say that as a huge Sopranos fan.

Just a bunch of hyperbole if you ask me.

You know how at mafia funerals it's all about who sends the biggest, most extravagant arrangement?

Maybe the greatest actor accolades are a form of that?

We'll probably never know the real reason... you know, Omertà and all that.

ps - we don't need two of these threads. mine can be booted or whatever.

Anonymity still reigns, and so it’s an unspoken rule, like omertà, that buying only a six-pack of Stella and a pint of Ben & Jerry’s Oatmeal Cookie Dough, maybe some butter, isn’t to be viewed as pathetic.
