USA PATRIOT, how r u celebrating its 12th this Oct. 26th?

Postby Mad Howler » Fri Jun 07, 2013 11:10 pm

Given all the squawking today, it's hard to believe that it will be a full twelve years this October since the Uniting (and) Strengthening America (by) Providing Appropriate Tools Required (to) Intercept (and) Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001 became law with virtually no opposition.

Squawking is fine, but it seems that legislative action would be required to put many worries to rest.

What are the chances of that happening?

After all, we as a people, through our elected representatives, drafted and passed FISA and the Patriot Act and what has been done here, with Verizon and assuredly with other carriers, is possible under that legislation. Indeed, one Republican author of the law, who was quoted as saying he didn’t think the Patriot Act would be so used, has, in this frantic little moment of national overstatement, revealed himself to be either a political coward or an incompetent legislator. He asked for this. We asked for this. We did so because we measured the reach and possible overreach of law enforcement against the risks of terrorism and made a conscious choice.

Do you think you have some kind of right to privacy?
Tough shit...

I recently had my ten year old suggest that it is stressful that we have to worry about such things.
I agree.

Quoted from the above link (emphasis mine):
He continued: "This experience has taught me one very important lesson: without congressional action or a strong judicial precedent, I would strongly recommend against anyone trusting their private data to a company with physical ties to the United States."

Very sad, and a good example of why saying things like "I never thought I would see ... in my lifetime" is not rare anymore.
I do not think that this is as sad as where we are headed if we do not chose to collectively say NO.

While I'm 100% with you that the authorization to spy on anyone and everyone, know as the US PATRIOT Act needs to be severly curtailed, I'm not sure staying up all night talking to yourself on mostly progressive forum is any more effective then squawking.

Legislative action is needed, and there are a good deal of legislators on both sides who seem willing to re-examine this law. A non-partisan move to pressure those who aren't getting the picture (as well as doing a better job of educating our fellow citizens) is probably the best solution, though it shouldn't be the only one.

Please do not question my sleep hygiene as I find that creepy. While you have qualified this board as being occupied by "mostly progressive" folks, I have witnessed much to suggest otherwise.
Sorry if I appear to be "squawking", as I may be.
I like to think my voice is a smallish chirp in the sea of other dissatisfied voices.

Indeed, did you follow the address with the presstitutes today?
So much low hanging fruit with regard to educating ourselves.
Can we make our government "do it"?
Or is this some funky old notion?

Unworthy of comment by the eager-to-believers and their upside down universe.

The following brings on an interesting question.

http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/a ... et/278572/

Who is more macho with regard to taking dollars from our pockets?
A) Top secret America?
B) Internet monopolists?
or
C) Both in safe quiet collusion?

It seems that answer C is out of the bag,
So it is worth paying attention to next steps.

I'm going to force myself to stand with my arms outstretched for hours on end with a damp hood over my head and a live lamp cord affixed to my scrotum until I just can't take it anymore and break down in a weeping confession to all manner of evil shit I've never even conceived of prior to that moment, let alone ever thought of perpetrating.

So yeah, just another Saturday night for Yours Truly.

Fine,
Let us not forget the consequences of empire.
Let us have the capacity to deal with the consequences of...
https://www.youtube.com/embed/W0I6S8mva-s
Too bad we are not there yet.
Too bad it took a kid to get this out.
It is sad that we are so easily manipulated as a collective.
Too bad that the kid who got this out was so reckless with other data.
Had he not been,
Would it have changed his current situation?
Were there other whistleblowers, who did not go as far, chucked aside that you heard nothing about?
Does any one know if charges were brought upon the personnel in the above?
This does not represent my notion of America.
Too bad that I have a hard time folding up my 'bleary eyed' idealism.
I think that our founders taught against this.

If you are proposing to go on living in this country it looks like you will have to accept these dread implications and like many, eagerly embrace right wing policy as long as it comes from a Democrat. The Bushite/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Rove criminal cabal continues. Remember, you are being watched. By the way, whatever happened to the first whistle blower Obama prosecuted, Bradley Birkenfeld, who came from UBS Bank in Switzerland armed with a list of super-rich American tax dodgers?
