Dick Trickle

Postby Stella_Guru » Thu May 16, 2013 9:27 pm

Short-track racing legend and working class hero Dick Trickle, 71, died today of a self-inflicted gun shot wound. He was the all-time leader in stock car racing victories, raced around this area for years and was a genuine nice guy.

Story I heard on the radio this morning was that Trickle went to the cemetery where his granddaughter is buried, called 911 and said there was a dead body at said cemetery and when police arrived they found him there.

ESPN got some mileage out of clowning his name throughout the '90s, announcing where he finished in every race, regardless of where. But he was NASCAR's oldest ever rookie-of-the-year at 48 and renowned for his mechanical abilities (he worked on his own cars, unheard of these days). Never won a Winston Cup points race. Also, cut a hole in his helmet so he could smoke while driving (reportedly only during cautions).

Gotta wonder what took him to such a dark place, but stories make him seem like the kind of guy who would have wanted to go out on his own terms.
