Had to copy and paste your url. Here is the money quote from that article:
Sonic Drive-In, which has a growing reputation nationally for its made-to-order fast foods and frozen treats, will continue its recent push into the upper Midwest by opening 20 restaurants in metropolitan Milwaukee and 10 in the Madison area.

curse.

Madison doesn't need 10 more fast food burger places, commercials be damned.

theres nothing sadder than eating in a car, and this place celebrates it.

Years ago, Britney Spears reportedly told an interviewer that Sonic was her "favorite restaurant" - I think of that everytime I see anything about Sonic. It's an unbreakable mental association.

If you consider the Madison area to include suburbs (Middleton, Sun Praire, Verona, Fitchburg) Madison has 25 McDonald's, according to the store locator on their website. When I heard 10 Sonics, I assumed that was a long term projection for the Madison area. They probably even include Janesville and Beloit as part of the "Madison Market".

Probably NEVER see a Sonic here

Postby Sgrmac » Tue Jul 22, 2008 12:08 pm

Just like the lure of Krispy Kream coming here from Milwaukee...I doubt that Madison will see a Sonic ever make it here. Nearly 10 years ago, developers of the Krispy Kream 'franchise' in Milwaukee promissed 10 new storefronts. Only 2 have opened in the Milwaukee area and NONE in Madison. Don't get your hopes up for a Sonic buger anytime in the next 10 years....

So you don't think there's an eensy weensy difference between the business models for Krispy Kreme and Sonic?

Let's see....

Krispy Kreme makes its product available at every convenience store on the block, thereby ensuring that no one ever need go to the actual storefront, thereby ensuring that no one buys the big profit margine items like mugs, shirts, and watered-down coffee.

Sonic advertises nationally with smart, funny ads that make the food seem appealing, even though large chunks of viewership have exactly ZERO access to those products, thereby creating a sense of anticipation and demand far outpacing supply.

Sonic: expanding. Krispy Kreme: shrinking.

Yeah, it'll never happen.
