Frozen Car Door Locks

Postby MadMind » Sun Dec 23, 2007 11:29 pm

Anyone else that parks outside get their car door locks frozen?
I tried everything. Hair dryer, WD40, heating up car key, and finally store bought de-icer.
Nada.
Worst part about it is yanking on the car doors hard enough turned on my interior light, which is dimming by the hour. Great, now I have to get a new car battery :x

Only time my locks ever froze I used a grill lighter to cook them open.

I seem to recall our family pushing our cars into our one car garage, turn on an extra heater, and defrost them. One car would get defrosted, and we'd go onto the next one.

You could also get one of the doors or windows open, slide in, turn it on, and drive around, with the heat on until it defrosts.

Find a friend with a heated, underground garage...

Try this. Brew a pot of coffee. Drink it. Brew another pot of coffee. Drink it. Wait, wait, wait until your bladder feels like it's going to burst. Run out to your car, whip out your dong and let lose a steamy spray of the warm contents of your bladder, carefully aiming at the frozen hole that is preventing you from inserting your key. The warm liquid will melt away the icy dam and you will be able to successfully insert your key and unlock your door. I have successfully loosened frozen locks in the past doing this. I call it the "you're in" method of defrosting frozen key holes.

Two of the more exotic remedies I've heard of are silicone drying spray or something like Icy Hot. Then go to an office-supply or craft store and get small magnets to cover the keyholes. That flexible magnet-stuff should work fine.

Once you've gotten into the car, try to find a warm garage or shop to park it for a day so it warms up. Then take the doors apart, scrub out all the old WD-40 and crap with isopropyl or denatured alcohol, and spray everything inside the doors with silicone spray.

Wouldn't the hot coffee be hotter than piss?!

I can remember crawling through the utility shelves in our old work van, 'cause I locked myself out. A warm garage will de-thaw in a few hours.

The difference is in the delivery system. Hint: it's a male thing.

And how exactly does the hot piss reach into the inner workings of the door/lock jam so it will defrost all of it?

Seems like if you don't know exactly which part of the door is causing the jam and how to hit it exactly, you'll just make it worse by adding frozen piss all over the lock and door mechanisms.

Call one of the towing companies in town. I would bet one of them has a device to do it.
